Hello, and here we are to discuss Manga Shakespeare. Now you must be wondering: What is Manga Shakespeare? Well, it's a no brainer really. It is Shakespeare in Manga form. Now most the books are not set in Shakespeare's time but in times that you would not expect. So, starting with the family friendly books, I'll give a description.

A Midsummer Night's Dream: It is the play in a modern day Athens. It is strange when you think about it but it works great. And Bottom still gets turned into an Ass! The animal not the body part.

The Tempest: In this version of the play which is set in the future, where an energy crisis has sent humanity into a second dark age. Caliban is ape like, Ariel is hurricane like in appearance, and I think it works well, comibing the past and future into one story.

Macbeth: Shakespeare's greatest tragedy is given the Manga treatment in a future post nuclear world of mutants and Samurai. I'm not joking here, Macduff has blue skin, everyone is using a katana, and the armor just looks so samurai.

Romeo and Juliet: It's the age old story set in modern day Japan, with a war between two Yakuza families.

Hamlet: Set in the 22nd century (the back of the book says 2017, but the actual pages within the book say 2107) in a cyberworld, this gives a new setting for the tragedy. Oh and Hamlet has white hair and a tattoo.

Twelfth Night: It's the comedy in a steampunk setting.

Richard III: Nothing different, it has the 15th century setting and Richard looks a bit like a crow.

As You Like It: The comedy is set in a modern day China, making the play seem more worldly.

Julius Caesar: A futuristic Rome, which might have Julius Caesar as Emperor. Tell you the truth the artwork seems so Western and not like a Manga at all. Oh and Portia is pregnant so it makes her suicide all te sadder.

Othello: The setting is rather otherworldly. The characters all seem to be half human and half animal, with Othello and Desdemona having angel wings and ram horns.

Steampunk Twelfth Night. I admit, I am intrigued by this. That would probably make for a really interesting staging too.

ON THE SUBJECT OF SHAKESPEARE IN JAPANESE SETTINGS, GALDAROF HAS HEARD THAT THRONE OF BLOOD, AN ADAPTATION OF MACBETH BY AKIRA KUROSAWA IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ADAPTATIONS OF THE PLAY. GALDAROF WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS VERSION.

Those sound pretty interesting. Agreed with Draco on the steampunk! I think I've seen a Romeo and Juliet manga like that one. Are these real mangas, or are they your own ideas?

Now for the more teen oriented books.

Henry VIII: Nothing really special about this one, the setting is the historical setting, but I can't help but think that Henry might look a bit like Gannondorf.

The Merchant of Venice: Now let me tell you something, The Merchant of Venice was the first Shakespeare play I ever saw, and when I found about this manga you can bet dollars to donuts that I was interested and it does ot disappoint. Venice has been transformed into a fantasitcal, floating, Elvish city. Like something from Lord of the Rings, all the characters are elves. It is simply epic for lovers of comedy or fantasy.

King Lear: Now this one is rather simple, it is the play set in 18th century North America, with Lear and his daughters being First Nations people.

Much Ado About Nothing: This play is set in Risorgimento, a polictial and soical movement in history between 1815 and 1871 which created modern Italy.

Yeah, I know I already made a topic about this but not in this forum but this is being put in the correct section. I've read A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello (the best of them IMO), Macbeth and The Tempest. How about you guys?

I THINK my prof actually used slides from the 12th Night manga in our lectures <3 I know it was definitely manga and I spoke to her afterwards and she said she got it off the internet (however, as a Scholar she also confided quite happily that she's bought several of them :awe: ).

I really love that prof <_< She's so cool, I wish I was doing better in her course.
