I didn't mind DBZ when I was a kid since TV was just something I watched when I got home from school, but I would never watch something that long again unless I was watching it as it was going along. That said, I hate short anime. 12/13 episodes is just too short. Madoka and Haruhi were probably the only 12 episode anime I watched, the rest are between 20-24 or so. |

I will not watch anything longer than 26 eps. The only exception to this so far has been season one of Hayate no Gotoku (which I still haven't finished.... I'm taking my time). I actually lean towards liking 12-13 ep animes the best. Sometimes they have to cut a couple things out, but they more or less never have filler. I will not touch Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Dragonball, FMA, Fairy Tale... etc. |

I've experienced a blindingly awesome revival of my Inuyasha fangirlism, but I definitely agree that it just went on way too frickin' long. The only reason I've gone back and watched as many episodes as I have is because there are a lot of excellent elements to the character and story, they just had to grind 'em up and scatter the bits amid all the rehash and flash-backs. Because holy crap, the flash-backs. EVERYWHERE. ALL THE TIME. ENTIRE EPISODES OF JUST FLASH-BACKS. The Final Act was amazing though. Wasn't worth watching 160 other episodes for, but like someone on the first page said: if they'd paced it like that then OMG it would've been the absolute best anime ever <3 As for the thread topic in general, I love long series' but only if they're long for a reason. Like, I don't consider Bleach (despite it's disgusting length) to be intolerable so long as they add content that makes sense. World-building arcs, power loss, etc. I like, especially when there're substantial skips in time where you're like "oh snap, someone had a baby.". I like being able to sit down and read or watch a long series, because I feel like I have a better chance of really immersing myself in it than with a show that's over in 12-16 episodes and I'm like "I was only just beginning to care, and now it's done." |

Things that don't have a distinct end condition (which may change over the course of the anime) are aimless and silly. "Collect them all" or "reach this goal" where the number or location is ill-defined (No defined number of feathers/shards no real idea of what One Piece is) is just annoying, and has no promise of a decent payoff. Fullmetal Alchemist was a long-running series that went well because there was a distinct goal, a constant progression towards that goal or, otherwise, a given impression of importance in most things done. Dragon Ball Z past the Frieza saga fell into the trap mentioned above; it was just one 'save the universe from some bad guy(s) with a set of gimmicks, level up, beat things.' Up to and including Frieza had a clear progression and buildup. |

Well, about DBZ. It's fairly well known that Akira Toriyama wanted to end the series after each andevery major villain, starting with Goku's befriending Piccolo after asploding the tournament arena. |

I agree with most of what's been said here. 13-26 is generally what I like to see. The only exception I've seen so far that works for me was Rurouni Kenshin, and DBZ when I was growing up cause I started watching it while they were airing the Saiyan Saga here in the states. Some should be longer though, especially ones like Angel Beats. That one felt rushed because they only made it 13+OVA. |

^What Sunny said. I don't mind a long show if it's long because of the plot - like FMA:B - and not because it has excessive filler. Though if I see an anime that's already over 100 episodes and still going, with no clear end in sight, I'll often reject the idea of watching it simply because TOO LAZY. But generally I find around 24/25/26 episodes to be a good length. Shorter anime can be satisfying as well, though some leave you feeling like there should've been more to them. :\ |

Plot or not, I want to see proper execution and care put into the episodes. If all I'm seeing is the same punching or tree-jumping animation been tossed around with minor variations for 20 episodes, then I'll be questioning why I should give a damn about the show when the creators clearly don't. Nor do I want to see the same angst ridden heroic BSOD where they whine about not being strong enough to fight some uber enemies, just so that they can make the exact same angstfest in the next arc against enemies somehow even more uber. |

As a kid I watched a lot of long animes (especially DBZ ;x_x) but I don't know if I have the patience these days to watch them. Especially DBZ which was filled to the ton with filler (although there is Kai). Also, I can't stand episodes where previous ones are summed up with flashbacks of them. That was one reason why I lost interest in Naruto. I suppose I'm around the 13/26 mark myself. Though I'm currently watching Bomberman Jetterz, which is like 50+ episodes. XD |

I summarize this in one word..... Shounen I know there's already a topic for this somewhere... but most super long series are angst-ridden battle centric shounens. (DBZ, Inuyasha, Bleach, Naruto, Etc.) |

No, not shounen. That's why I didn't use that one word for a summary D< There are shonuen that are done well that are not actually so centralized on constantly beating up the ever-uberfying spectrum of space flea enemies. Most of those things are shounen, but shounen as a genre can be done well. Law of Ueki is one example of a welldone...ish Shounen anime, HunterxHunter is another. EDIT: Oh and there's densetsu yuusha no densetsu...mmmmmm <3 and Star Driver~ Either way, there's other shounen anime than the shitty ones like DBZ or Bleach or Naruto or TTGL |

I suppose I should have clarified my intent. Almost all animes that have that angst ridden battle theme are shounens; not all shounens have that theme though. My all-time favorite anime, GOSICK, is listed on MAL as being shounen. (though I seriously question this...) There have been a couple of well done shounens. Though generally speaking, I dislike the genre. Star Driver just looked beyond stupid to me... and the more I heard about it, the more I was glad I didn't touch it. EDIT: Did you really list TTGL as a shittly done anime? Whether you liked it or not, TTGL was very well done, and is one of the few shounens I will actively promote. It's not even remotely in same category as those other pieces of shit. |

Star drive breaks away from that sentence I listed that you mis-summarized as Shounen completely actually. The actual battles it has are extremely marginal to an overarching plot, there's hardly much attention to them at all beyond their actual occurance. The character actually develop, they develop a lot in fact aside from the main cast. The abundance of focus on side characters and antagonist was quite refreshing actually for a shounen anime. It has camp quirks, but they are no way cliche and are often blown out of proportion in a faaaaaaaaaabulous way. If you can get the obvious troll setting out of the way(giant mecha from space powered by libidos hidden in a underground island disguised as boarding school where all the faculties dress either like dominatrix or gay stereotypes to break the seal of mysterious island maidens while they are naked inside technocolored maiden mechas), yes that sound stupid at a glance. But really, that's just an overall premise, the creators appear to be in full awareness of its apparent stupidity and made everything so over the top in a constant upward spiral. There's something you just need to take for granted when watching it, and if you can grant them that, it'll be an awesome experience. The amount of character focus that were tossed in were simply amazing, Star Driver knows how exactly to take itself seriously at times and when not to. This kind of contrast and execution is more than what can be said of most anime. Though I grant you it neglected a few characters and the ending was bad. TTGL on the other hand, is an over the top action series, definitely nothing less like that if you call that well-made. But barely something more either. And it falls into that exact formula, might be refreshing that it has less angst. But with the enemies been easily viewed as paper bags whose only purpose in life is to get beaten up by the ever uberfying protagonist and looking like cocky dweebs while that's going through, it's a little hard for me to take it remotely seriously. With the same process repeating with each arc as a more uber villain appears. A bit lacking in variety, and having camp testosterone basically replacing main character exploration, followed by a plot dedicated to emitting more testosterone and have them thunder across your screen. Which by itself is an acceptable preference for shounen anime lovers actually, I guess I can give this a little bit of leeway. Though why did you want me to place it separately from the "epic" shounen animes? EDIT: oh yeah, for non-shounen angst-ridden anime, check out school days. |
