None of you shall ever find me on TF2. >_> That's how damn good of a Spy I am. Hyuck hyuck hyuck. Also, I reset my stats, since my friend fudged them up. I allowed him to play on my PC for a while (this was before TF2 became free), and his Demoknight crap surpassed my longest hours for ze Spy, which was 76 hours, 42 minutes, and 4 seconds. Don't ask how he managed to do that. |

So what's the learning curve like for this game? Like, can I just download it and go to town and play with everyone, or am I going to need to log hours in a single-player mode or undergo many tutorials before I can play without dying every five seconds and not having fun?

A bit of both. You can have lots of fun playing with everyone, but if you just rush into groups of the enemy team all by yourself you can expect to die a lot. Good thing you can respawn. Alternatively, you can play against the bots, which are fairly smart, smarter than some actual players, ho hum. Just stick to your team, you'll do fine. |

Learning how to play is easy. Learning how to be good at the classes takes a bit of practice. |

going to see if I can jury rig a way to dl this without a working mouse. Also Tan sent me an invite to the ToK group like months ago and it never went through, and I can't apply to join because IIRC it's by invite only. |

Check the stickied topic at the top of this forum y'all. Add your names there, and boom I'll send an invite. Some tips for new players: -Don't play on 32-man servers. Way too spammy and cluttered. In the same vein, if a server has insta-spawn, it's no good. The game was optimized for 24-man play, with respawn times. -Know when to run away. If you're running low on health, retreat and find a health pack, or call for a Medic (I think the default key to do so is E). Dying and waiting for respawn, then having to walk back to where the fighting is is a lot more costly than retreating for a moment to recover. -Watch for spies disguised as teammates. Some telltale signs of a Spy: -----If you see an ally attack another ally from behind with a melee attack and kill them, they are a spy. -----If you see an ally standing near Engineer structures and place a strange object on the structures that makes them shoot sparks, it's a spy. (If the Engineer is nearby you might also hear the shout "Spah sappin' mah teleport/dispenser/sentry!") -----Disguised spies cannot fire any weapons besides melee attacks, so if you see an ally standing around without shooting, they might be a spy. Note that they can pretend to reload their weapons, however. (Conversely if an ally fires a weapon, you know that they are not a Spy.) -----TF2 has no friendly fire by default, so if you do something to an ally that actually causes damage, they're a spy. Pyros especially are expected to "spy-check" by briefly flaming allies to see if they catch on fire. -----You can walk right through allies, so if you actually bump into an ally and it messes with your movement, it's a spy. (Note that if an ally specifically tries to avoid collision with you they could be a spy trying to avoid getting caught) -----If you see a non-Spy ally materialize from invisibility, they are a spy. Even if they look like an allied spy they might still be an enemy spy. -----There is a weapon Spies can have which allows them to fake their death, leaving behind a corpse and automatically turning invisible when they are shot. If an enemy or caught Spy dies suspiciously fast, be on alert for this. Now, some personal tips that are just my own opinion. -The best way to learn to play is just joining a server and playing. Though if you really have no idea what you're doing, checking out the training modes is likely a good idea. -When starting out, I suggest using Heavy, Soldier, Medic, or Pyro. The first two are just easy to use classes. Playing as Medic and sticking with another player will let you observe how others play that class, which can give you ideas on how to play that class yourself. Pyro is also easy to understand, though it's a little bit more difficult to be good with than Heavy or Soldier. Stay away from Spy and Engie until you know how they work a little better by seeing how others play, where they place their structures as Engie, etc. -In the gameplay options, there is a setting to see a visual display of how much damage your attack does to an enemy. Turn this on so you know how effective your attacks are, and whether or not you're even actually hitting them. There is also a setting for the game to play a sound effect whenever you do damage. I don't use that one personally but it may also be helpful. -Turn on simplified weapon switch so you can switch weapons faster. I have no idea why the more complicated method that requires more clicking even exists, let alone being set as default. |

However, if you're a PC fps nut before this, scout and/or sniper would probably be right up your alley. However I don't think there are many of these people around simply because tf2 is such a popular fps. If you are playing medic, don't just stick to one person. Heal everyone, and be generous. And don't follow one guy into the entire enemy team. Also, there's an option for medic to only have to click on a target to heal rather than hold to heal. This is much, much better imo. Right click on pyro with the flamethrower is the airblast, which puts out fires on teammates, pushes back enemies, and reflects projectiles such as rockets (rockets are the most common thing pyros use the airblast against). This is an excellent from of crowd control and help to your teammates. When playing Spy, I find that to get the best results, simply stay out of sight via invisibility, hiding, or staying out of their field of vision, i.e., off to the side, behind, etc Depending on what medigun you're using, the ubercharge will a)make you and your target invincible for 10 seconds b)makes your target deal all damage in critical hits or c)triples the healing rate on them, and makes them impervious to movement effects such as airblast and slows. The normal healing rate is 25 hp/sec, so the uber will grant 75hp/sec. You will be expected to use your ubercharge to rush in and do damage. Classes viable for this are typically the Soldier, Pyro, Demoman, and Heavy. |

A couple other notes about Medic: If you're playing medic, stay near other people at all times. You should be pretty much constantly healing or overhealing somebody. Ideally, you should never need to pull out a weapon because your allies will kill anyone coming for you. Also, learn to hide around corners so that enemies attacking your healing target don't end up hurting you too. In that same vein, if an opponent has a medic healing him, go for the medic first. If you kill that Medic, even if the other person gets away, it's going to hurt a lot. As a Pyro one thing you can do is airblast the Medic away from his pals. This is an especially good tactic if they're employing an ubercharge. (except the new Quick Fix ubercharge, airblasts are ineffective against that) And of course, if you've got a Medic buddy with you, protect him as your first priority in most situations. If an enemy runs right past you they're probably going for your medic. |

And if not killing people wasn't your fancy, try either demoman or soldier. Soldier has very forgiving rockets that can kill easily, so it's a good introduction to offense and projectiles. Demoman's not very ideal for direct combat, but if you're on defense, try protecting something. Place your stickies on the point, near the cart, and wait in ambush. Don't forget that your grenade launcher bounces; try putting some over the hill or around the corner if you know someone's there. Remember, all of this goes "boom" so you need to avoid damaging yourself by exploding stuff at extreme close range. That's what the bottle, shotgun, and shovel are for. |
