Has anyone been following the Derpy Hooves controversy lately? It's amusing as [radio edit]. I posted something about it on my Temple blog. I think that this, though, says it all.

I just thought Derpy was one-dimensional and not funny at all. >_> I haven't been following what the fandom's been saying about it though. *goes to google*

There's a controversy?

Derpy has always been the fan name, and Lauren Faust and the animators call her that too. But the name was made canon in The Last Roundup, and this angered fans who believe that the name is an ableist slur against mentally retarded people. Those fans advocated writing e-mails and such, though their efforts were pretty much universally rebuffed by the staff of MLP. Then WeLoveFine started taking down Derpy shirts, and iTunes removed The Last Roundup. Bronies got butthurt, some thought it was because of ableism claims, others because of copyright concerns over some random brony coining the name. There's still no word from Hasbro.

okay, the argument itself isn't hooey, but in all fairness, it started as an animation error, fans took a shining to the character, giving it a name and ascribing traits, like personality, percieved job, clumsiness and the overall DERP attitude. Then the animators bring the fan persona to reality, more or less, and people explode when they perceive the character whom they always loved for being a hilarious ditz actually being a hilarious ditz.

The people who started the ableism argument are, IMO, the sort of people who look for any tiny thing that they can use to light a fire under someone's bum for their personal favorite cause.

I think the argument itself is valid, but I do agree with you to a degree. Like, their complaints would have more weight if they didn't get up in arms over every little thing and chose their battles instead.

In the show, Derpy is a well-intentioned clutz who unwittingly destroys his environment with every move he makes. As an individual, unique personality trait that'd be fine, but, if I understand correctly, some fans believe the show is portraying Derpy as a mentally handicapped pony. Representing mentally handicapped people like that is not okay of course, and I'm pretty sure that was not Hasbro's intention. >_>

I'm not really sure where I stand on this. Maybe just chill out?

If anything, I think linking a derpy and destructive person called "Derpy" as a pony to real-world mentally handicapped people is the more ableist or narrow-minded perception. That effort would be better spent actually improving the lives of mentally challenged people, instead of further perpetuating or making people aware of an us-vs-them binary.

Really, I just want to see the bronies get a kick in their entitlement complex. :awe:

Giraffes are adorable.

You know since this is an education show and all would it cause controversy to make an episode about ponies that have mental disabilities?

Now sure what is and isn't allowed for children's television.

That same exact thought actually crossed my mind.

Like, an episode where the ponies learn to treat Derpy nicely.

Personally, I think that would be really great, and it's what I've been hoping for since any controversy came up.

And now for something completely different!

I know Arthur touched on Learning Disabilities but not sure about the more extreme cases. Sadly both children and adult shows use people with mental disabilities for easy laughs.

Since Derpy's appearance overshadowed AJ's plot I thought the part with her and RD could be a part of a potential plot to introduce about how most of society usually sees mental disabilities. RD is annoyed with Derpy and talks out loud sarcastically "yeah it's a mystery" not acknowledging that Derpy does have intelligence and could understand when others look down on her.

Then Derpy starts to cry and flies away. Background characters gasp at RD for her insensitivity. RD tries to make it up to Derpy. Derpy claims that no one wants to be her friend because of the way she is and RD says (but she is really reluctant about it) she will be with her for the day.

But things aren't simple. Derpy gets into some antics which annoys RD and other ponies she came in contact with. Meanwhile Fluttershy sees RD is really annoyed and having a talent for kindness decides to help RD.

Derpy gets into a mess again and feels angry about herself that she failed RD yet again. RD is about to scream but FS reassures Derpy "it's okay, everyone makes mistakes". RD sees this and joins in.

Can't think of anything else as it's 2 AM here.

Okay when I found this I was like "[radio edit] THIS WHAT THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE TO BLINK."

...and then I realized how they did it and...I actually like it. A bit cluttered but they put some good effort into it.

"HAHA, LOOK AT HOW SMALL IT IS."

So, apparently the new episode has been released on iTunes 3 days early. An accident, I'm quite sure, but. If any of you guys got iTunes, could probably download and watch it early?
