I'm skeptical that Celestia and Luna used to be friends with him though. The way Celestia talked about him, how he used to rule Equestria, it sounds like he was always a malicious deity, and she and Luna usurped him for the sake of the land. There's also the interesting fact that Cheerilee refers to him as a draconaquis, (or however you spell that) which implies that he's part of a species and there are others like him. Now, whether they're all trickster god types, who knows. Also, Discord is a lot more manipulative and evil than I thought he'd be. I mean, damn.

Also, oh man, that episode. It was exciting! Actually pretty darn grim for this series. I mean, look at the first two-part episode. The first part had silly stuff with Twilight meeting the ponies and reacting to them, and the second, though they face Nightmare Moon, was already tempered by the tone of the first episode, and Pinkie Pie's song eased the tension too. This one starts with Equestria being plunged into chaos, then the Elements of Harmony disappearing, then the ponies being turned into the opposite of their elements, and... I mean, wow. But, lol, Pinkie Pie. You are still best pony. <3
