Perhaps I'm being too judgmental. I'm thinking of stuff like, say Clannad, where everyone has a tragedy or a dead parent or something. Or even if one character has one, it's full of angst, and the character is traumatized and needs the comfort of another, or they go on a rampage, or their history is a deep dark secret that they brood over. Or where the character puts on a brave face and earns admiration. Kyoko's story is part of her character and there is a very human feel to it, despite it being a little unusual. It's never played up for drama or spectacle. Sort of underplayed, even, but still present in her actions and decisions.

I'm pretty sure you're generalizing a lot, there. A character's backstory is always a part of who they are. Just because a tragedy happened in a character's life doesn't make them unrealistic. Especially if said tragedy shaped part of their personality. :U

I think what she's saying is that most "backstories" tend to play out shallowly and obviously taking the most cliched routes, as well as have groups of miserable people getting together to mope.

Not having seen the character in question I can't per se describe it but it might be a more nonstandard sort like a longterm medical case via chronic illness, some kind of life affecting mental condition that colors everything she does without destroying her, etc. etc.

I.e. a person you likely know instead of someone you likely don't like talking to because jesus man they're so depressive.

Then she's not watching the right anime.

Hmmm. I think I'm going about my point the wrong way.

In many works of fiction (maybe not even most, but many), the tragic backstory is treated as a key event. Sometime's there's suspense and mystery around it, or there's a mental breakdown, or lots of angst, but there's often something dramatic about the portrayal. With manga/anime, the portrayal is often dramatized further by the voice actor, colors, angles, etc etc etc. Maison Ikkoku has a somewhat slice-of-life feel to it, so the tragic backstory has an slight casual feeling, which IMO adds to the appeal and realism.

Okay since the Fate/Zero anime isn't out yet I can't say Gilgamesh because nothing in the anime relates to why I like him (aside from his last words before he dies).

So! Let's talk about somebody else instead. This character is not loved for the good he does, because he causes so much more suffering. I am, of course, talking about a little guy that there's no way you haven't heard of by now:

Spoiler: click to toggle

That's right, you knew this was coming. Kyubey, the animal mascot of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. He of the /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ face that you will see in your nightmares. QB, as he shall henceforth be called, starts out simple enough. It's a magical girl anime, he's the mascot that's going to make our cast into magical girls. But then, you see that, even in the most horrific situations, his face never changes. Something's off with this guy, you might think. Indeed, you'd be right. QB is the kind of...person? Sure, we'll go with that. He's the kind of person that doesn't exactly tell a lie, but he won't tell you the truth either. He'll tell you just enough information that you asked for. He is, however, not a liar. Whatever wish you ask him for, he grants. You might think that he'll use exact wording or whatnot to mess with our cast, but he doesn't, really. Every wish comes true, it's not HIS fault what happened afterwards didn't go as planned. Now, QB is memetic for his "hey there wanna become a magical girl?" approach to everything. Something bad's about to happen? Cool story, bro, but QB just got himself a super powerful magical girl. Of course, in a series that pretty much has spoilers in every episode past the third, you know there's more to QB than what I can put without a spoiler tag.
Massive Spoilers
Granted, a lot of his appeal is lost if you didn't watch the show, because then you don't get all of the /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ points.

I could probably say more, but I'm getting bored, so.

So in conclusion: Posted Image

Check out my spicy wasabi beats

This is a tough one... I have too many favorites.

I think my first favorite character from an anime was Himoura Kenshin, Battosai the Manslayer. He's the inspiration for my namesake, and that anime will always hold a place in my heart.

There's also Sawamura Seiji from Midori no Hibi, especially the version that appeared in the manga. Watching him slowly change over the course of the story because of Midori, turning from "I don't give a damn delinquent" to someone who can be respected and looked up to (and primary love interest of... 1, 2... 4 girls?), such a great anime, great characterization.

Other characters of note include Yui from Angel Beats(Yui-Nyan~<3), Okazaki Tomoya and Sunohara Yohei from Clannad (Sadist and Masochist relation for the epic lulz), Sugisaki Ken from Seitokai no Ichizon (HAREM ENDO!!!), and Shichika Yasuri from Katanagatari (By that point, you will be torn to pieces).

I agree wholeheartedly with what Kiki and Chrono said. Subtly and understatement, it is lacking most of the time. >_>

Neuro is probably my favourite anime (really more for his manga self), and also Gintoki for just not giving a [radio edit] about anything except sitting around the house and reading Jump and eating. It's pretty realistic.

Only the blue version btw

And I think I understand part of what they were trying to say--a lot of those characters with the trauma backstories and whatever, that ends up being, like, entirely who they are and the entire point of the character and all of their development, rather than just being one of many influences on them.

Guys, that's enough. Let's not get into a 'I don't agree with your view so you are WRONG' mindset with this topic; that's not the purpose of it. I'm not excusing Peytral for his blunt manner, but I expect better manners especially from people who are/were on the staff team to learn to respect other's opinions rather than 'poking fun' at it like twelve year olds; it's not needed at all.

This is the last I (and others, I'm sure) want to hear of this from anyone; now let's try and be civil about this, please.

I was actually being serious. Robotech had so much involvement and editing done from westerners that it could barely count as an anime. Not dissing it, as I've never watched it, but yeah. >_>

Also, joke's on you, Radnarel. I don't even know what 'baka gaijin' means!

It makes me sad that only stuff from Japan is considered here. :( But I suppose that's anime by definition.

And you could make a thread for more general character discussion.
