I thought this would be a fun discussion as well as revelation for us, since we're often discussing anime, but never really the characters unless it's for a specific topic. I think this is too big for the main anime topic as well, which is why I didn't spring the question there, so sorry about that. ^_^;; So yeah, reveal your favourite character(s) if you can, and why they are. Try to avoid/notify of spoilers where you can. Now I think mine is going to surprise a few, because I rarely talk about her, but hey, first time for everything. ![]() Misato Katsuragi, from Evangelion. Even though Evangelion gets very confusing, when I watched it in my beginner teen years, Misato was a character that ended up speaking volumes to me. She is a cheerful, alcohol loving woman in her late 20s who is Nerv's operations director, and a field commander during Angel Battles. Although she is Plucky Comic Relief, this is just a third of her character because she is very complex. Sure, she makes me laugh, but she is also an action girl/'mother' who can be very determined and underneath her happy-go-lucky style, yearns for love and is very insecure. She can be very childish and touchy (has no problems cracking jokes at other's expense but goes mad when others do it to her) because she's so insecure. I'm a big fan of the Action Mom/Ditzy Adult type character. But I wouldn't nearly love this archetype as much if it wasn't for Misato, who was the first example I ever really saw of this archetype in anime. She is way more than just fanservice, being a mother/big sister figure to all of the Children in Evangelion and has a lot of depth to her character. She fits well in many of Evangelion's different situations; she can be hard-nosed and cunning during Angel Battles, comedy gold during the lighthearted scenes and even get you to pity her during her sad scenes. She also has some pretty awesome lines; my personal favourite being "Acts of men are better than acts of God." =P Notable mention goes to Kanako Watanabe from Star Driver for her trollish, yet surprising character depth. Can't think of a third... >_<;; |

Imperial Army State Section III, Pumpkin Scissors. Everyone is so great. :3 Especially the Lieutenant and the Sergeant Major. And the Big Guy, although he's kinda scary when he flicks on that lantern. |

I liked Rin from Inuyasha. Characters stick out to me but I have a hard time deciding what's a character I definitely like more than others from different series. |

FINE. >:U (hurr I ended up writing like a plot summary of the first episode by accident. nyoro~n) I guess right now my favorite anime character(excluding SRW characters) would have to be Noriko Takaya from Gunbuster. I don't think I've ever seen a character go through so much development in just six episodes of anything. Noriko starts out as a normal girl in an all-girl high school that trains kids to be mecha pilots. In the beginning, Noriko has absolutely no skill whatsoever in this regard, being easily the worst pilot in the entire school(she can't even stand up straight in her mech). Despite this, she ends up being one of the two chosen pilots to go into space as part of a worldwide earth defense army due to her father being a famous space admiral. At first, Noriko is dismayed by this decision, as she has little confidence in her abilities and because several other students begin bullying her. Motivated by her coach and Kazumi Amano who was also chosen and whom Noriko idolizes, she begins putting in a better effort to succeed, eventually proving herself after defeating one of the most skilled students in a duel. Once in space, Noriko has to deal with memories of her dead father and the harshness of war. This is when her development as a character really begins. For most of the series, she's angsty due to spoilerish reasons, but in the last few episodes she gets over it, begins piloting the titular Gunbuster despite the risks involved, saves everybody and becomes a raging [radio edit]ing badass. Then she has to deal with the fact that due to the light-speed travel in the series, several years have passed on earth in the few months she had been in space, and it only gets worse from then on. I omitted a lot of stuff I would've liked to add, because SPOILERS EVERYWHERE if I did. Regardless, I just really like Noriko's development throughout the way too short series, and think that she's overall a really awesome character, even when she's angsting. Not to mention she pilots one of the most [radio edit]ing badass mechs ever which can literally kick through millions of giant battleships at once. Look at this smug [radio edit]ing giant robot. Seriously, this mother[radio edit]er doesn't even uncross its arms during battle. It knows how badass it is, and it and Noriko pretty much embody the Badass Arm Fold. Because she, too, is pretty much one of the most badass characters ever, without just being badass like, say, Kamina(even though Kamina's great), but growing into one. Plus, she's the main character of the show that practically invented fanservice. And... uh, yeah. Guess that's enough. tl;dr: Noriko is the best ever. Honorable mention goes to Nono from... Diebuster, Gunbuster's sequel. Because she's pretty much one of the most simultaneously ditzy yet badass characters. |

If it's a character who is in an anime, I think that qualifies as an anime character. I actually like a lot of the secondary characters in Naruto. Most of them had a lot of potential, and the series could have really gone somewhere good if the author hadn't decided to focus on the one-dimensional main characters instead. Shino is one who stands out that I particularly liked--he has a really cool concept behind his character, and juuuust enough bits of characterization that you can speculate on him a lot, like with much of the GS cast. Kittan from Gurren Lagann is another character I have a lot of respect for. He probably gets more actual character development than any other secondary character, and as an older brother myself, I kind of feel a sort of imaginary cameraderie with him. Massive spoiler

Not exactly an anime character, since I've only just read the manga and probably won't touch either anime, but I absolutely love Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist. Spoiler: click to toggle Can't think of many others that stand out considerably. There are plenty I like - Vash and Wolfwood from Trigun will always be faves, Kamina, Viral and Kittan from Gurren Lagann spring to mind... but yeah, nothing that seems amazingly popular to me for any reason other than "They're just awesome." |

Kamina. 'nuff said. Well, I like too many characters. So many that it gets hard to pick or even remember them. Natsume Shin from Tenjho Tenge, Urahara from lolibleach, Hinata from the ninjas, Dark from DNangel. I guess that's all I can remember for now. Also, [radio edit] yeah Kittan! |

There's a reason why I love the Haruhi Suzumiya series so much, and that reason is the main character. She's complicated and interesting and a good person underneath it all. I could sympathize from the beginning with her desire for a more exciting world, where one person could mean something and adventures full of friendship and excitement could exist. Her audacity also amused me; though it's not something I'd emulate, nor would I want to be subject to it in reality, sometimes you just have to admire gutsy actions that go so far across the line that they're funny. Plus, here's a character who matures, learns to value friendship and normal life, even without letting go of her dreams. If you don't just dismiss Haruhi as a psycho from the first episode or two or the first book, you can watch her develop as a character and see her become someone actually rather admirable in a lot of ways. By the time we get to the later books, she cares about her friends and her brigade, willing to fight the student council to keep the literary club from being disbanded, for instance. And playing for ENOZ at the cultural festival is a real turning point; it's touching to see her explain to Kyon why she did it, an action that was motivated by concern for others, showing that Haruhi is learning to think of others and not always put herself first. Basically, I can appreciate this complex dreamer character, and her outlook on life has affected the way I think about things at times. ^^;

Oh, right. Yuki forever. The Haruhi character is neat, though. I look forward to seeing her growth in later books. (Still gotta pick up Disappearance - I've ordered it, though) Also, Haruhi from Ouran. |

Going with manga characters:Yotsuba of "Yotsuba&!" is a carefree kid whose antics make me incredibly nostalgic for childhood summers. It's a shame Yotsuba has become a 4chan meme, because she's really better than that. Her daily-life adventures remind me of how great it was to be a child, constantly learning and constantly having fun. She's hilarious. :3 Honorable mention: Kyoko Otonashi, the warm, caring apartment manager from Maison Ikkoku. She starts out the series very insecure, and we see her work through her issues throughout the course of the story. She's one of the original tsunderes, but unlike many, she's got reasons for it in her backstory. And unlike many anime backstories, hers manages to be emotional while staying completely realistic. There is nothing over-the-top about Maison Ikkoku. Takahashi wrote it to be "a love story that could happen in real life," after all. |

To be fair, Yotsuba is probably the one anime character that nobody on 4chan will condone rule 34 of. She's something akin to respected there. It's quite odd. |
