It's crazy to compare the early-90s-high-fantasy look of some of this art to the haunted looking art of Twilight Princess. Hard to believe they are from the same series. Going into a bit more the computer vs traditional art, if I may... effort/care has more to do with detail than media. Most of these Link's Awakening pictures are simple ink drawings with light washes of color. While beautifully designed and rendered, they don't take long. I've been taking an art class where the adult artists do stuff like this in an hour or less. We typically imagine making traditional art as being a long, painstaking process of getting the paint to go right and the details to look good, but pro artists know how to quickly lay down a sword and some palm trees well enough to make simple, effective pieces to complement a video game. It's a skill. There's definitely some lazy looking computer art out there, and you're right, they do cel-shading quickly, but then there's stuff like this that probably took hours. Try to find a spot where the color doesn't seem to be changing, or where there is not an insane amount of detail and depth, even though it's so cartoony. O_O Computers can only help you so much there. But yeah cel shading is cheap; thanks to photoshop my friend made a megaman picture that looks like official art even though otherwise he can just make stick figures. DX Not that it's not fun (*is drawing a cel shaded picture right now*) |

You totally should, Squee. I don't hesitate for a moment to say that it's my all-time favorite video game. It has fantastic gameplay, beautiful music, a powerful story, good level design, challenges, and it doesn't eat your life. It is ideal. |

I swear that first picture spoilered under "Japanese official art" is used in either the Zelda 1 or Zelda 2 instruction manual, leaning toward 1. If not, it's definitely the same artist who also drew some stuff for those ones. |
