Hey guys!

I just found a source online that had all Link's Awakening official art. That includes stuff in the magazine official guide. I'd be glad to share it here with you guys. You have my word that it's of the utmost high quality - they just don't do stuff like this for games anymore. There are about 70 images.

Want?

This was the first game I remember playing <3 I was ill and my brother was trying to make me feel better, so he showed me how to steal things from the shop and how we would be killed when we went back in.

You'll see the care that went into these images as I post them. You can decide for yourself. I suppose I was more impressed that they're all hand-painted. There's plenty of official art for games today, but I think many of them are computer generated, or cell shaded, or whatever. Check out the quality of some of these:

The Eight Siren Instruments

Can you recognize all of these characters?

Scenes from Koholint Island

I'll wait for another post to reveal more...

Is there official art of the topless hippo

oh by the way were these made by the Japanese design team or the American one?

Because I know a lot of times the American localization teams would make their own art for instruction manuals and stuff (like the artwork of the various enemies in the manuals for the first two Zelda games, for example)

oh and that frog's name is Mamu, but it probably should have been localized as Wart like it was in Super Mario Bros. 2

Monkey's name is "Kiki!" The site where I got these reported that most of these were found in a German player's guide, actually. I'm not sure if this art was exclusive to Germany or not. There was Japanese-looking art on this guy's site as well, and it looked like bad 90's animation, kind of like the Zelda TV show, except Link had the correct hair color.

I found the site on a Google image search for "Link's Awakening fanart" and didn't save it. >.<

In the meantime, have some more owl!

Note that the species changes

Sorry, Crash, no topless hippo.

You know the whole story about how they censored that for our version, right? I really wish NoA didn't care so much back then because the original deal with the hippo is hilarious to me.

You know the hippo that's posing for a painting in Animal Village that sits down when you approach her and tells you to go away? Originally she was supposed to be posing for a topless portrait and quickly covers herself with a towel when you come near. The censors didn't like that too much so they removed her breasts and the towel so that she just looked like a regular old hippo getting a regular old drawing.

Designers still map out huge amounts of hand-drawn concept art, and that computer generated art takes them a long time too. Hand-drawn isn't necessarily more heartfelt, anyway. An experienced artist can whip out a little watercolor of a violin or a monkey like it's a household chore, y'know.

On topic, I've always liked the world behind Link's Awakening, though I've missed every chance to play it. The tropical island setting seems so cool, and at the time a good way to mix up the Zelda games. And it's the parent of the Oracle series, which I liked. Marin has always interested me as well, and her relationship with Link. Gotta play that game.

Japanese official art

So, let's talk about hand-drawn or painted art versus CGI.

I wasn't aware that computer-aided drawings took that much longer. I guess I figured that if I could make decent-looking computer art, others far more competent than I could do it in their sleep. By contrast, I look at stuff like this:

and think, "man, there's no way this was just the work of an afternoon." I also tend to compare other games' collections of official art against that of Golden Sun, which I feel has a pitiful offering of official art, so all of this loving artwork for Link's Awakening just blows my mind.

In summary, \_(o-O)_/

It's pretty rare, but some games/companies have shittons of official art. It really depends.

The first two games had a decent amount of official art but Dark Dawn only had real good offical art for the first three playable characters and that is saddening.
