I've not really heard of any hate for FFII. Not any love either, though. Kinda like FF1 it's just kinda there. |

I really like FFII's normal battle theme and the 2nd boss theme. I think I beat that postgame dungeon where you Spoiler: click to toggle It took a while though.

I never hated FFII, but there were a few things in it that drove me nuts. For starters, it was IMPOSSIBLE to run. Like, Gary Oak ambushing you after you getting your ass whipped, impossible to run. Next, unless you grinded every character to utter gods, able to cast black and white magic, along with insanely proficient in one weapon, you were going to get plastered. OK, maybe it wasn't that bad of a grind, but it was still extensive, which, combined with the inability to run away, was REALLY annoying. The last thing that stood out in my mind were terribly defined borders of monsters. Like, Tirisfal Glades sitting next to Western Plaguelands before 4.0.1, but WITHOUT a massive mountain and a well guarded choke point to warn you. I remember fighting like, Imps, then I wander around, and I'm fighting Dark Wizards and Hell Knights or something similar. And yes, I also played it on the GBA version. |

You ain't listening in the right places then, Chris. Rebel Army Theme >>> Castle Pandaemonium And yeah, NES version is a train wreck. You actually lose stats based on their disuse/use of others. Of course 95% of those who have played it played a later version first so that doesn't really stand up as an argument against it. Anyway, I don't think it's a bad game, but merely mediocre and in terms of main series games it is only better than III. The character/stat leveling up system is perfectly fine, but the weapon/magic leveling up systems are awful simply because of how freaking long it takes to level anything up beyond the first few levels. And the lategame puts so much emphasis on magic that if you haven't grinded it all up to acceptable levels, you're toast. The story ain't too bad, you can see where they kinda "re-did" a lot of it in IV to improve it. |

I think III gets respect out of the class system as it laid the groundwork for later games in that regard. Granted, the story is just a rehash of I, and it's a bit of a grindfest at times, it's still fun, especially the DS redo which adds character development to the protagonists, where the original was just 4 random dudes like in I. |

III was meh. Finished it once, never really touched it again :| I'll give it props for having an awesome iteration of the Red Mage though. |

Agreeing with this. On top of the whole rest of the game (Phoenix Downs not purchasable, jobs unbalanced, etc), the final level is horrible. Lost to CoD because she had five attacks per turn? WASTE HOURS DOING THE LEVEL AGAIN AFTER YOU WASTE HOURS GRINDING IN THE FIRST PLACE. |
