Is. So. FREAKING. LONG. I mean geez. I beat the game, 68 hours in (while using a guide for most of the game), only to find out that there's an optional dungeon I can attempt for some backstory on the Hero, and then beat the last boss again for the true ending. Then fight ANOTHER optional boss, who has several forms. I'll never finish this game ;_; But anyway, who here has played this game? At first I thought it was kinda meh, but I think it's pretty good now. The battle system is painfully slow though. |

Since when is a long game bad if it's also good? I intend to play this... some day. One of the few DQ main series games I haven't played yet.

^Indeed. And Raven, it's not bad at all, it's just, I'm genuinely surprised at how much this game throws at you. Every time I think I'm done, something else comes up. >_> |

Aww yeah Yangus was a badass. I played maybe about an hour or two of DQVIII before selling it to pay for whatever I wanted at the time. My main problem with the series in general is that i'm required to accept the fact that the main character has absolutely no characterization and that it's "me". If I wanted to play as myself, i'd go on a MMO or roleplay here. That said, I am giving the series a second chance with DQVI. |

go back and play DQVII and then you can complain about long RPGs, more than 100 hours long and you literally do not get in a single battle until about two hours in Also Jackal, about the first half of DQIV is playing as various other characters who have personalities and such, though they don't necessarily show off the personalities while you're playing as them. Also the English version of the DS game took out all the party chat which reveals tons of characterization, but trust me, DQIV isn't all blank slate hero all the time |

I can accept the blank slate thing usually since a lot can be inferred for many of the games. After all, you get married and have kids in V, and for fear of avoiding spoilers for VI there's a crapton of interesting stuff you find out about the hero towards the later parts of the game. Silent Hero Syndrome is disappointing, but not quite the be all and end all. And Crash is right about VII, that is probably the most ridiculously lengthy JRPG I've ever played. I gave up trying to finish it after about 50 hours of playtime because it just kept dragging on and just didn't interest me enough any more. Which is, actually, what happened to me with DQVIII as well. I liked it mostly because, as Jackal says, Yangus is a badass... but it just feels so slow. The battle system is somewhat drawn out and not that involved - you barely get any spells or skills no matter how you spec your characters, so it just feels like "attack attack attack heal" on repeat without any real thought put into it. Couple that I was like twenty hours of gameplay in and my characters had about as many levels, it really just felt like I wasn't progressing fast enough to make it interesting. I'm sure it gets better, but I just eventually gave up, too. Yet despite this I've finished III, IV and V at least twice and VI is close to a second completion. Once each on their original consoles and once on the various remakes of them. |

...Why do you like the Golden Sun series then? Sure if you play the games in order Felix has characterization via the first game and the second and DD retroactively give Isaac some, but Isaac and Felix lack characterization in their own games and Matthew doesn't really have any either. Granted, the bits of character you can grasp by bouncing off how other characters react to them is still more than the DQ series gives, but it's hardly a selling point here either. |

Because GS is actually good ![]() That, and unlike DQ, GS doesn't generally have a similar game released around it that I deem better (read: Final Fantasy). |

Wait did you just call Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest similar because that hasn't been true since like Final Fantasy 4 |
