Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

Giraffes are adorable.

I am expecting to be Ninja'd as soon as I post this. I am typing this based on memory so some facts may be wrong.

EV: effort values. Battling certain pokemon will grant you EVs such as taking down Golbats give you speed EVs/ Four EVs grant you an extra point on that respective stat. You can have up to 255 EVs per stat and 510 for the individual Pokemon itself. Certain held items like Macho Brace will speed up the process by either doubling EVs gained per battle. There are other EV training items that also add up EV points per battle. Pokerus also doubles so combining a held item and Pokerus will make EV training go a lot faster (4x EV per Pokemon you fainted). Vitamins such as protein give you 10 EVs per item and you can only feed up to ten of these so you can get 100 EVs per stat from them.

IV: Individual Value: 2 Pokemon from the same species can have different stats. A lucky Pokemon can have 31 IV for all stats (I heard Joey's Rattata has perfect IVs, It really is in the top percentage of Rattata). They also add points to the Pokemon's stat. There are ways to bred IVs from parents and such but I normally don't bother with IVs.

Wasted some EV's on a stat you don't need? Some berries will reduce EVs on a stat so you can put them elsewhere on that Pokemon.

Huh, really? o_O Never knew that; surprisingly deep actually. What's Pokerus?

Also XD at there actually being weight behind Joey's Rattata being in the top percentage of Rattata.

Pokerus is a "disease" you can randomly develop after a battle--the chances of it happening are SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the chance of encountering a shiny Pokemon. Once one of your Pokemon has it you can spread it to others pretty easily. It doubles the rate of gaining EVs for that Pokemon, permanently. Once a Pokemon has PKRS it can be transfered to other Pokemon for about the first 24 hours that it has the disease.

Pokerus doubles the EV gain you get from defeating a Pokemon. So a Pokemon that would, say, give you 1 point in Attack (eg Lillipup or Patrat) would give you 2 points instead. Use with Power Items (Power Bracer, in this case) for great effect.

Power Item EV bonus = 4 points

Lillipup's EV yield: 1 point of Attack

Pokerus doubles that.

1 + 4 = 5 x 2 = 10.

Therefore, defeating 1 Lillipup while holding a Power Bracer and being infected with PKRS would yield 10 EVs in Attack.

A random event after battling wild Pokemon, a Pokemon in your party could be infected. The Pokemon Center will let you know about it when you heal your Pokemon if a Pokemon of yours got it. It is tradable so someone gave me an infected Marill back when I was trading on the Gamefaqs board so I can infect the rest of my Pokemon. You infect the rest of your party by continually fighting battles so eventually your entire party will be infected. A Pokemon becomes immune if it is in your party at 12 AM in the 4th gen but it can still get double EVs. Keep a Pokemon with Pokerus in your PC if you desire to infect more Pokemon because the Pokerus does not disappear if a Pokemon is stored there.

IIRC Pokerus is easier to find than shinies but whatever.

Also a common trick is to leave a pokemon with "active" pokerus in a box so you can spread it. Just make sure it isn't in your party during midnight.

Not quite - the game performs the check to remove spreadable Pokerus at around midnight, regardless of how long that Pokemon's had it. Storing the Pokemon in the box renders it immune to the check.

IIRC, Pokerus has a 1/10000-something chance of appearing after a battle compared to a shiny's 1/8192 chance. =P

But it is thankfully tradable so as long as someone is willing to give you a Pokemon with Pokerus, the rates do not matter.

Yeah, I wouldn't have Pokerus on my game if not from a friend from my school, haha.

I actually got it myself in Pokemon Ruby but I restarted the game so now it is gone from that gen. I even remember that Latios was the one who got it.

Chance of encountering shiny - 8 in 65,536, simplified to 1/8192

Chance of contracting Pokerus - 3 in 65,536, simplified to 1/21845.3 repeating

Wow, so the chances of encountering it are that low? o_O I've never even caught a shiny save for the Red Gyarados. XD But I can see why people would try and get it so much if it gives that much of a boost to Pokemon.

Well if anyone ever wants Pokerus I'll try trading it to you when I'm at my friend's house since they have WiFi...

I have it but I am not in the mood to trade now. And I can only give to the fourth gen games at this point as I don't have a second DS yet (3DS) to trade from 4th gen to 5th gen. Maybe later I will want to trade.

Well if I were able to trade with you now, I have plenty of Pokerus-infected Pokemon transferred over to my copy of Black.

But yeah I like how this topic became a discussion of the in-depth mechanics /o/
