Gotta agree with Sunny, here. The jump from Red to Gold was mind-blowing in terms of advancement. The jump from Gold to Ruby was cool, but not as awe-inspiring. GSC also updated more areas of the game: interface, battle mechanics, and world-building. RSE didn't really update the interface all that much, nor did they add much new to the way the Pokemon world worked.

Things like these aren't noticed when playing remakes, like FR/LG and HG/SS. I think the core reason GSC is so well-liked is nostalgia due to the innumerable advancements made.

That said, while it's the least memorable gen to me, RSE gets props for one thing, at least.

Nuzlocke.

I would say to improvements done to the Pokemon franchise by gen 2 is comparable to how the Mega Man formula was improved by its second game in comparison to its first game. Both these sequels are loved by many because of them much to the annoyance to others who only see them as overrated.

Keep in mind, be careful when using MM2 as reference. There's a large portion of the Megaman Fandom (myself included) that is absolutely SICK of Megaman 2. I don't see that with pokemon, luckily.

That's why I said "much to the annoyance of others". I understand that it is an understatement but since I was including Pokemon gen 2 in that statement I went for the softer words.

Edit: There are other franchises I could have used for that comparison with games many people love while others find it overrated such as Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros 3 and Final Fantasy 7. But Ocarina of Time has a different form of gameplay from Link to the Past, the fandom for Mario isn't vicious when it comes to SMB3 (at least from what I can gather), and there are always flamewars between FF6 and FF7 so that wouldn't work out as well. If you fell there is a better example than MM2 then go ahead and use that.

I don't know why it's so fun to troll people that go "BAWW POKEMON SUCKS NOW BECAUSE IT ISN'T LIKE GEN 2" by posting stuff such as "Megaman X7 is better than G/S/C/HG/SS" on GameFAQs.

Maybe it's because they always take the bait.

Well, those in the MM fandom who dislike MM2 dislike it usually because we're sick of it being rehashed over and over again. MM9 was a nice nostalgia bomb. MM10 was pushing it. MM Universe... yeah, guys? Move on. Seriously. Move on.

Basically, it's like if every game was basically Gen 2 afterwards, rather than evolving to Gen 3 and then Gen 4. Now here we are in Gen 5, while MM is still rehashing MM2 for the original series.

Lol Mega Man Universe: http://protodudesrockmancorner.blogspot.com/2011/02/mega-man-universe-is-alive-undergoing.html

looks like they are doing loads of changes to it. I haven't played the demo myself, but I watched others play it and many hated it.

Pokemon may have the same basic formula at its core but at least they do something to improve on it and enhance it every gen.

Oh, I hope so. I'm so sick of MM2 rehashes. It was a great game, yeah... back when it came out. Let's hope they do something good to it, because the nostalgia bomb factor is gone after MM9.

But yeah, the dislike for Gen 2 is more hype backlash. Everyone is just saying "this is the greatest ever!" and I'm all... This is okay at best. I really don't get the love for it, and from what people say, the hate for Gen 3 just seems more like people being butthurt that they can't go back to Johto and Kanto.

I'm not saying Gen 2 is bad, it's just... nowhere near as good as people are saying.

Personally, I like each generation better as they go forward. I loved Gen 1, Gen 2 was confusing and scary and awesome and I got to go back to see how stuff had changed since Gen 1, Gen 3 was... a bit confusing as to why I couldn't go back, or trade any of my old Pokémon up, but I found it fun, Gen 4 was SUPER AWESOME, and I can't wait to get my hands on Gen 5.

Hardware limitations (The GBA can't connect with the GB/C) and some mechanic overhauling (Shinies/Gender aren't decided by IVs, IVs range from 0 to 31 instead of 0-15 and some other stuff i'm forgetting ATM).

The issue I had with gen 3 is how much Nintendo and Game Freak desired to squeeze every ounce of money out of its consumers. Want all your beloved oldies to be with you in your Ruby and Sapphire? Too bad! First you will buy Collosseum and XD for you beloved gen 2 starters and some select Johto Pokemon (never played XD so there may be some Kanto Pokemon there as well). Be sure to restart a bajillion times so you can have them all female because we are being stingy with your beloved ditto. Now go and buy Fire Red and Leaf green for the rest of them. Have an e-reader for some legendaries like Mew and others. The list is endless and which is why gen 3 loses a bit of points from me. It is a good game but I hate how restricted it was unless you had money to spare.

At least gen 4 wasn't as hard on the wallet.

On the plus side, Colosseum and XD were great games. I'd kill for a Gen 5 version of it, because it would not only serve as Battle Revolution did and allow for epic 3D battles with friends, but also allow for another great adventure in 3D catching Shadow Pokemon, which Col/XD showed was a really nice change of pace once in a while.

I love Pokemon and Battling, what can I say :awe:

Oh god I completely forgot about the fact that you couldn't get some of the old Pokemon in Gen 3 until all those games came out.

That probably lost it a LOT of points.

And think of it this way, Role. What did you like in Gen 3 and up? How much of it was in Gen 1? Some of that probably started in Gen 2.

Wheey! I've became a human being!! I am very handsam!

Eh, some of the behind-the-scenes stuff yeah, but a lot of things were to improve the experience for all types of players.

Fun fact by the way: Mega Man 1 has been remade and ported more times than Mega Man 2 has. The fandumb should probably start hating that instead.

Fandumb should be hating FF1 more than 7 because the first game has been ported many times too and 7 never got its remake at the point of this post. But it's the FF7 discussion which has the fights on it either being as good as it is hyped or the most overrated thing ever.
