I personally found them horribly designed :v Johto should've been bigger IMO and Kanto shouldn't have been stripped of everything cool like the Pokemon Tower (screw the radio tower thing i want my tower graveyard). Also level pace was bad (Kanto Gym leaders should have at least Lv60~70 pokes and the Johto leaders + E4 need the level pacing found in Platinum or something IMO). |

I hate what they did to Pokémon Tower too. It was awful. "Let's kick out these graves for dead Pokémon and turn this place into something for cheap entertainment!" How disrespectful... I hope the people behind the Radio Tower thing got haunted by Pokémon ghosts for the rest of their lives... That aside, I did like the games. Even if neo-Kanto was a little depressing. At least they brought back Viridian Forest in HG/SS... ... This was probably my longest actual post in Pointless Gibberish like ever. o-0 |

I can totally understand not liking GSC much as I'm the same way. It's easily the generation with the most boring Pokemon designs overall, and yeah most of your other criticisms too. There's just no place to level up well for the second half of the game. HG and SS fixed so much of that though, fleshed out Kanto a little more, added later Pokemon eventually, and just made so many improvements that it is pretty easily the best Pokemon game (possibly up until the release of Black and White, we'll see how those go). The level pace was still not that great, but that's what trading over to Diamond/Pearl/Platinum for a while is for! |

Part of the love might be nostalgia too. G/S/C VASTLY improved on several game mechanics (the bag, anyone?) and introduced the Dark and Steel types too. R/S/E didn't add nearly as much, and, frankly, was BORING at many parts (although the Pokemon designs were superior), which feeds into the nostalgia thing. Not to mention that watered down Kanto is still more content than the other games had post game. Basically, G/S/C didn't really do anything that could be viewed as worse than before; everything was an improvement or nothing at all (unless you just hate Johto as a whole). Whereas R/S/E had stuff like Pokemon Contests (the fact that you can ignore them doesn't stop whining, of course) and D/P had slower battles and character select forcing that always let people go "last Gen was better." I mean, you can say the first Gen is the best, but mechanics wise, you're pretty much fandumb if you complain about G/S/C improving the bag, letting you forget HMs, and all that other stuff. |

Only Littleroot to Petalburg IMO but then again the start of every pokemon gen is boring really. Also i really dislike Johto for needing Kanto to have any length (Seriously it's just too small), and i think G/S/C Kanto is too bland and it takes like 1 hour to complete (At least for me). But yeah, the new mechanics and the improving of stuff was a positive point (breeding was like the best thing to happen in the whole of pokemon). |

Well Well if you hate ocean routes the end of R/S/E is a nightmare. And yeah, Gen 2 isn't perfect, like you said. But with series that have people going "so and so part was the best," it's usually either the first entry or the one that laid all the groundwork that is often touted as the best. Gen 1 started it all, and Gen 2 really helped to bring Pokemon into what it is now (although Gen 4's physical/special split was also godly). |

The reason Kanto had some things taken out like the Safari Zone and Viridian Forest was due to data restrictions on the G/S/C cardtridge, so when they remade the games for DS, they were able to bring them back in all their glory due to having more space. As Boyd said, it was mainly improving the few bad points of Gen 1, and it's post game content was pretty sweet. Naturally, people felt let down when R/S/E didn't have anything like that, so it kind of impacted their enjoyment of the game. Plus, R/S does have some annoying moments. I think it's the least interesting of the Pokemon regions myself, due to the large ocean routes and things like going way off track endlessly just to finally be able to reach Lavaridge Town. Maybe it's just me, but I like the Gen 2 designs for the Pokemon and it has some of my favourite Pokemon designs. Back then Pokemon was more about picking animals and making them Pokemon, whereas now you've got more variety with things like statues and plants also becoming Pokemon, so I understand that people probably find them more interesting than the likes of Gen 2's Pokemon. Or maybe it's for different reasons, I guess. |

I like a good balance between animal-like pokes and non-organic/monstrous pokes myself. I mean it is Pocket Monsters after all. |

I hated Gen 3. It was pretty boring, and there were only a few parts I actually enjoyed. I've never played Gen 4 so I can't comment on that (nor Gen 5, but that's gonna change soon). But Gen 3...ugh. Most of everything about it was just bland and boring. I didn't really like the Pokemon designs all that much either, although some are cool. |

I hear you. Until SS, it was the only gen I never played. I finally got it and was all... this is it? I really don't get the love for second gen, just as I don't get the hate for third - I rather liked Hoenn... |

This, and Hoenn, outside of HG/SS Johto is probably the best looking region ever. (Haven't played Gen. 5 yet) |
