It can be passed down to one's offspring (and only them; it's similar to an organ transplant, so the body will reject it if it's too different), so they don't have to start learning magic from square one. Essentially, to use an analogy, let's say Rin's dad was a level 30 mage with level 100 spells, and Rin was level 10. Passing the Crest down to Rin means she can start with level 100 spells right off the bat, instead of having to work her way up from 10. Note that once a magus passes down their Crest, any spells they knew only from their Crest and never learned how to use manually will then become unusable.

They CAN be physically interacted with; like I said, basically magical nervous system. As such, if they get damaged, paralysis and such is indeed possible just like with normal nerves.

Spoiler: click to toggle Not necessarily for Shirou or Saber, but Rin. Her dialogue was like right out of a hentai. Also, I'm surprised at the amount of detail they gave it.

Rin was in-character sometimes, but really, her reason for meddling with Saber sounded like a poor excuse to have a yuri sex scene. And some of her comments weren't very Rin-like to me.
