![]() ...my Murfy passed away today... I got up this morning and was eating breakfast, when my mom comes up from the cellar and tells me that my kitty, who was very old and whose health was deteriorating over the past few days, was gone. I didn't want to go see his body. I don't know why. But I recall I didn't cry till after I got home from school and I actually realized Murfy was gone. I think I was in... four grade...? when we found him. Correction: he found us. He was a stray, who just wandered up to our house one day, decided he lived here, and never left. He was fat. He also has a really damaged tail that seemingly got run over my a car. His tail tip got amputated when we took him to the vet, so he's always had about 3/4 of a tail, that was always sticking straight up into the air. He followed everyone, particularly me, around like a puppy the first few days we had him. We hadn't yet tested him for feline leukemia, so we couldn't let him in the house with our other cat, Feather. He was completely friendly and we never did find out where he came from. For one thing, he was not the cutest cat ever. He had really long fangs that poked out like a vampire's when his mouth was closed, and his fur was really scruffy and he had one serious gut hanging. But he just had some kind of charm, so we kept him. It took a long time for old Feather to get used to him. She was sort of a cranky old lady. Murfy didn't mind her of course, and only tried to be friendly with her, usually getting a his in response. For a long time when Murfy was first brought into the house, he had a weird habit where instead of crouching and then laying down, he was just let himself tip over to the side and then fall on his side with a thud whenever he wanted to lay down. He also liked to chew paper. He kept that habit right up till the end. In fact, he used to do it for attention, mostly, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be doing it. Sometimes he would pull a piece of paper out of the trash and walk off with it... cats can be weird. After a few years, after Feather has passed away, my mom brought home a tiny black kitten from a friend of hers who had found it in her yard. This was Sable, the "princess" of the household. She was very young when we first got her, so we had to bottle feed her kitten formula and litterbox train her. Murfy reacted kind of reluctantly to her at first, but he warmed up to her pretty quickly. He sort of "took her under his wing" in a sense. He snuggled with her and wrestled with her, and I have noticed there are some things Sable seems to have learned from Murfy, such as never going near the road, and how to drink water from a running faucet. Murfy was an outdoor cat. We never declawed him. Surprisingly, despite his FAT, he was a really great hunter. He would never eat all of the mouse he caught though. He would just leave half of it on the porch and come back inside, and then throw up. The funniest thing about him perhaps was how he used to catch chipmunks. He was fascinated with chipmunks. If he found a hole where there was a chipmunk living, he would sit there, and stare at it. And stare at it. For hours. And eventually the dumbass chipmunk would come out and Murfy would catch it and then proceed to try to make it his best friend. He never killed a chipmunk. Only played with (more accurately, tortured) them. Mom wasn't happy about the way he would pick on those chipmunks, she she went outside and put a rock over the hole so the chipmunk would stop coming out and getting caught. It... sort of worked... every day for a while after that, Murfy would go outside, sit down and stare at that goddamn rock for hours. ![]() Murfy was not a loud cat at all. In fact, I never once heard him actually meow. I've heard him hiss, just once, when he first encountered Sable, but other than that, we has silent, except for when he wanted to go outside. He would stand in front of the door, take his impressively long claws, and dig at the underside of the wooden door until someone got fed up with the racket and either let him outside or threw something at him. And then, came the squeak. I think it was his attempt to meow. But it came out more like a rapsy "...aoww" I'm sure Mima remembers this. Possibly the most ridiculous noise ever. Murfy also couldn't purr out loud. You had to feel his chest or throat to see if he was purring or not, which most of the time, he was. I don't think there was a time when he wasn't purring. Murfy was a pretty smart cat. He knew how to open doors if they were left alone. I also believe he had a strong sense of empathy toward humans. Whenever I was really, really upset (which honestly isn't often) he would show up and sit next to me. Even if I was sitting somewhere he never went, like the living room couch or the computer desk. It was hard to be upset around him. A few years later, we came home with yet another kitten, this time Baby, the brown tabby. My aunt who gave him to us told us he was a girl, and we didn't realize otherwise for probably a month or more... after we got that sneaking suspicion that female cats didn't have balls. Murfy and Baby were instant BROS. Murfy must have been relieved to find out he wasn't the only male cat around anymore. Sable however, hated Baby immidiately. [title=I'm sorry I had to]It seems blackrom is a trait shared by both cats and trolls.[/title] Murfy often ended up being the one to come between the two and break up the fight. And thus was the Epic Cat Trio. Murfy, Sable and Baby. Doofball supreme. It kinda feels like the house is missing something with only two cats... like we just removed the kitchen or something. It's empty and awkward. Dad's going to go out and bury him tomorrow morning. It kinda sucks that he had to go in the winter... I don't know if I'm going to watch. I don't want to get myself in a dumpy mood before my friends birthday party. He'll be buried next to Feather and PG and Darcy. Who knows, maybe some chipmunks will make a burrow near his grave. I'll miss him. Best damn cat ever. If Vae responds with a relevant post even longer than this I'll eat myself. |

What about me? See, Lemu, shift back to '09 for a bit here. Back to when I only knew you as one of those wacky people I'd joined Fanfiction.net to be around. In fact, I think, back up maybe a bit more than that. I had this awesome cat Nibbles. He had a stable purr, yeah, but he was similar to Murfy, it sounds. I am firmly and honestly neck deep in the earnest opinion that no feline overlord could ever come close to matching Nibbles's sheer awesome badassery. That cat could open doors. He also was king of not just -his- territory - but damn near every other animals' in the neighborhood, as well. A cat and a full grown dog tried to fight him and he beat their asses and sent them packing. Without having taken -any- wounds. And you know what? He found mice. Yes, he did. He also caught BIRDS. And other things. A rabbit, once. I think the only reason we never had any pests to deal with is because Nibbles has scared them all off. He often left mice corpses on the deck, a silent proclamation to mousekind everywhere: Don't [radio edit] with this household, or you will be caught. And his badass status COULD NOT BE CONTAINED, Lemu. When death came knocking, he told him to take a sit on the curb and wait. He held it off for over a month. He felt hollow, at times, when I held him, and he was weak, and he probably had trouble sleeping. But me, me and him. Me and Nibbles, us. Something was weird. He went off into our woods one day, when he was in his dying act. He stayed there for three days. We figured he'd went off to die in the woods, in his own way. I respected that; but then he came back. He trotted up to the house and was fine for a little while longer. We had a sort of mutual understanding. He would only die when we both could appreciate it. I still remember the night that he died, because I heard it. He'd been unable really to even drink water sufficiently. He'd just throw his nose into the bowl, and end up just wet, without getting anything out of it. Well, one morning when I woke up, I had the strangest inclination. His litterbox hadn't been changed - he'd been using it, yes, but not much - he wasn't eating or drinking, so he couldn't use it much. But I changed it anyway. That night, I heard his claws scraping against the ground before hearing a thunk. I would hear more scrambling scraping and then a thunk. Scraping, thunk, scraping, thunk. Part of me wanted to see what it was, but a more important part of me knew I shouldn't. Or didn't want to. so I did nothing. I stayed up, hearing this, and when I woke up rather late the next day, my family informed me he'd made it to his litterbox, plopped into it, fell asleep, and chose to die there. We're pretty sure he was blind by that point - all of his dying was internal. And he was kind of like how you said Murfy was. He knew people, he had an empathy with them. I remember multiple times when I was feeling like shit and he'd climb his way into my bed - my door was -always- open to Nibbles. He had pretty rather free reign of the house and took it, often deciding to plop into whoever's arms he felt like to be petted whenever he damn well pleased. So really they were different cats, at the heart of it, but similar in some ways. We held a funeral for Nibbles. I made a makeshift grave marker, and we dug a hole and buried him in his litterbox, covered by a towel. When he died, this cat was as old as me! He was a bloody sixteen year old cat! He had this weird cut in his ear like someone had taken scissors to him, but it worked for him. And you know, he was a kind cat. A really, really kind cat. I still go visit his grave and you should see the fits I throw if anyone disturbs the mark. I miss him dearly, but there are other cats I have now... He had a brother, once. He was a darker colored cat, we named him Shadow. But Shadow vanished on us before I was even ten, so for the longest time it was just me and Nibbles. and that dog we had, Max, but my dad gave Max away when I was 11. And then for a year or two we had those other dogs and those cats who had litters but Nibbles always quickly established order and we got rid of the other animals eventually. Nibbles was all we had when he left. We have two new cats, little cow-things now... but they don't get along anymore. :/ They used to be tight as nails, brother and sister, but now they hate each other and I can't do anything about it. And at my other house we have Kiara, a black /gold furred kitten who's the scardiest thing you've ever seen, except for when I'm the only one awake. But if you twitch, she'll go running, so it's kind of unamusing, even though I find myself bonding to her more than the other cats, who I've actually had longer and see more often. So, yeah. :/ My sympathies to you, Lemu. It's horrible, losing the best cat D: |

I'm really sad to hear he's gone, Lemu. *hugs* Nevertheless, you certainly seem to have wonderful memories of him and that's something you can treasure forever. He's no doubt playing with chipmunks in a better place now.
