ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS

You might be familiar with 'Just Bugs Me' if you're a TV Tropes fan, where people who have watched the same things 20 times just to find a miniscule flaw gather to argue. But there are so many things about Dark Dawn that bugged me, and I'd like to throw some ideas out there, open for debate, and whatnot. Btw, I kinda liked Dark Dawn. These are just things that are on my mind. alright, 1. The difficulty, obviously. I only died once, and that was on the last boss, because I hadn't realised I was up to the last boss yet so hadn't planned accordingly. Second go, I basically just summon rushed and beat him. Now, I hadn't gone to any of the bonus dungeons, I had never had to level grind, I had about just over half the djinn. My final playtime was 20 hours. This = far too easy. I know the first two games were not overly difficult, but I used to get stuck on a lot of boss fights, and they both took me a very long time to beat. So overall, that was kinda disappointing. Which brings me to number 2. OH MY GOD IT'S VOLECHEK!!!!!!!! Yeah, good job Camelot. Use the exact same plot twist again that you did from TLA. Alright. Shocking. The most embarrassing part about this is that before the fight, when Sveta is talking to him, I honestly thought it was Volechek. And then I thought, 'no, that's retarded. They wouldn't do that move again.' But nope, they did. Cool. I liked it the first time. This time it was just lame. In future storyline writing meetings, please can you instantly fire that guy who goes 'I HAVE AN IDEA FOR THE FINAL BOSS! IT'LL BE A FUSION OF SIGNIFICANT CHARACTERS, IN SOME KIND OF BEAST/DRAGON FORM. AND THEY CAN BE RELATED TO THE HEROES, BUT THE HEROES DON'T KNOW IT LOLOLOL'. Because that person is dumb. 3. Unless adepts can reproduce asexually, Amiti needs to have a mom. While I kind of like the idea that there is more to Alex than meets the eye, this is kind of preposterous. Can you imagine the first date conversation? Her: "Enough about me, more about you. What have you been up to recently?" Him: "Well, I was climbing a mountain. And then it collapsed, and I was thought to be dead for many years, and lived in an underground cave (or something) kept alive by the incredible power of the Golden Sun, and eating rats and Vermin. You know, those things that look like a Marill holding a trident. I couldn't bathe for the whole time I was down there, I haven't had any social interactions." Her: "Holy Kraden. Take me now. Impregnate me with your seed." I just don't see it working out. Everything Alex does is part of his quest for power. And I don't see how Amiti works his way into that. Nor can I imagine Alex falling in love. If they don't go into further detail about this whole thing in the next game, I'll be pretty annoyed. 4. Also regarding Alex, and easily the thing that annoyed me the most. That cringeworthy extended plot line about 'What is this masked man's identity?' I am assuming every other person here knew it was Alex the whole time. Even when they first showed his face-image that goes with his speech bubbles, which was SHADOWED OUT, I could tell, I assume this was the same for all of you (otherwise I have no respect left for you). Now, okay, there might be people who haven't played the first two games. But then for them, the 'reveal' that he is Alex would mean nothing anyway. In other words, this 'big reveal' is just completely stupid, and handled in totally the wrong way. Arcanus, I am disappoint. 5. Just tell me who Karis and Tyrell's moms are, for gods sake. please. This one isn't really a JBM, I guess. 6. I said this in another topic- So the kids who live in Vale never met Mia's kids? This is just sad. I would've thought they would all keep in contact with each other (the parents) and is it just me or did someone say no one knows where Felix is? Urm? So Jenna's family is reunited, and then she just loses contact with her brother? Alright. And just everything about this. Really, really, just bugs me. 7. The map. I'm not even going to pretend I'm okay with this. In TLA we got to free roam, and we saw all of Weyard. The part of my brain that should have been used for college exams is taken up with a map of Weyard. Put a blank one in front of me, I'll draw and label it for you. I know my video game geography, okay? NONE OF THESE PLACES WERE MENTIONED. Except about 3. Okay, so the golden sun changed the world. What it didn't do, was create civilisations where there originally was none. Towns which have an extensive history, ie had not been built by people whose homes had been destryoed. Pretty sure I didn't see any goddam Alchemy Forge when I was around Lalivero. And that Endless Wall structure? That wasn't there, and because it's the location of the Apollo Lens and all that, the ancients must have built it. More like and endless what the [radio edit]. 8. IT STARTED AS A QUEST FOR A GODDAM FEATHER. I AM JUST SICKENED BY THIS LACK OF ANY CREATIVITY. Or maybe it's the most creative thing ever. I'm sure I've got more. But let's discuss. |

Well, this one can be explained easily enough. The Insight Glass needed to go to an Ayuthayan, who also had to be an Adept. Since nobody in Ayuthay was an Adept, Alex had to get creative. What I find ridiculous is the fact Alex could have sex with another person. The guy's a complete sociopath. He only loves himself. And he was apparently planning things twenty years in advance. What. |

Actually, Amiti's parenthood is explained in great detail. You just have to listen closely to get it up. Basically, Alex swung by Ayuthay, saw a hot girl, tapped it, had some fun while he was at it, and then left. |

Kya's point about Alex being a sociopath is valid though. I mean, even though we swoon for his evil plotting, I just can't see it working out. I hadn't thought of the Insight Glass part though. However when a game script gets posted I'll read through again. |

Yeah, I mean if he stayed so low-profile that nobody else even knew who he was, their relationship couldn't have been long or meaningful. EDIT: And I don't think he really had it in mind that his son was gonna get the Insight Glass and all that. I mean, you didn't even actually need Insight at all so I don't see why Alex would need to manipulate a specific person into getting it. And now I remember that it was necessary to power the Alchemy Well. It could be true, then. Edited by Crash, Jan 26 2011, 02:13 PM.

For my personal canon, I just extrapolate Alex as being a "lonely sailor" that just wanted to have some hot sex and then leave. All machinations that he's done aside, I agree with Crash that Alex could probably care less about the Insight Glass. |

Is Alex even aware that Amiti exists, though? He DID leave before he was born :U EDIT: And as for the "Masked Man" thing, at least when Kraden finally gets to talk to him at the Apollo Lens it's stated that Alex wasn't really trying to keep his identity secret (made obvious by his remark at the Eclipse Tower that Tyrell was like Garet; who ELSE would know that but him?). |

I thought of something. Do you think the 3rd of a mask is not really trying to hide his identity, but an injury? |

As for the map, these features could have always been there, but you never got to see them in the first two games because they were not plot-important. To explain why they are appearing in places where there should already be a familiar, past setting, the Golden Sun caused mass turmoil with the land. It's like plate tectonics on a sugar rush. After all, the continents; heck the freaking planet is expanding outward in all directions. Shits gonna change. |

Yeah, I think Alex most likely sustained some kind of injury. On the subject of the thread, I agree with most of what you said, Alex. |

... Am... I the only one who thought this from the start, mruuw? O_o I always presumed it was an injury and it was an added bonus for him to hide his identity while he's at it. I mean, the mask doesn't cover his whole face, right? Why not just go get a full-face mask if he's hiding his identity, the way Felix did? And yeah, agree with most of those, Alex. >: |

That. I immediately assumed it was a phantom of the opera style mask (because it seriously is) due to Mt. Aleph shenanigans. Frankly Kraden needs to stop acting so bloody old. You spent MONTHS with this guy trapizing around the world. He frigging saved you from tolbi soldiers! And you're like "hmm I may have heard of you before." What IS inexcusable is Isaac never mentioning Alex to anyone. Um, hello? "This guy was manipulating everyone behind the scenes for his own ends" kind of important there. |

I agree with pretty much everything you said except for the difficulty. I played through the original games a year or two ago and found them just as easy. The two games probably seemed harder because we were all younger when we played through them. |

I really don't think that's true, though. Not completely. Yes, they were harder when we were younger, but they're still harder than DD. For instance, none of the puzzles in DD challenged me (or still challenge me) like some of the old ones. Specifically, the Muramasa log rolling puzzle, the Venus Lighthouse Mind Read puzzle, or some of the ice sliding puzzles in TLA. There's probably some more that make me think, but that gives you an idea. In DD, I think the only puzzle I had to think about was the general layout of the Dream Swamp Place. And battles, too. I never even touched a multi-healing Psynergy until...either the Mountain Roc or B&C, whereas in GS and TLA I'm using it by Manticore and Serpent. Even the optional bosses were a joke. I never grinded in the game, but I went and beat all the optional bosses with no effort, minus Dullahan. He took the same amount of thought and organization he took in TLA, but his dangerous moves (Charon and Djinn Storm) happened less frequently. |

About the map. I think we need to stop looking at the map literally. After all, mountains are smaller than Matthew and Isaac. Maybe we can assume some of the towns and cultures Isaac passed in the first game were there, just... shrunk, and out of the way. The map we travel across is just a representation of Angara. That's how it makes sense in my head, Iunno. |

2. That one was really obvious. I guess they put it in there to surprise new players. They better not do it in the next game, though. 'Cuz Alex better be the final boss. 5. This bothers me too (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ 6. That ticked me off. I mean its been my headcanon since beating TLA that they would all have like an annual get together once a year, or something. Seriously. 8. Oh man, after I beat the game I was soooooo pissed. During the credits, all I was thinking was "[radio edit] you, Tyrell and that [radio edit] feather. WTF is this $#!+." But then the psyenergy vortex made me feel loads better. I didn't like how up until Cloud Passage (and kinda after), it felt like I was being herded. "Go here, oh now you can't so go there, wait now go back to that other place" Grr. And I kept thinking "Yay! Now I can go go to Bilbin." But my princess is in another castle. Like 7 different castles. And now I have 5 party members, the game is +half done, and Bilbin? The Bilbin was a lie. Wow, now it sounds like I hated DD. I really did enjoy it, but it bugged me a bit, too. |
