So, what towns in video games do you guys think have horrible designs? As for me, Lohan in Legend of Dragoon and that one town in DQIX with the river and the bridges and the ladders. You know the one. I forgot its name. (“・ω・)つ |

That city in R/B/Y with Koga as a Gym leader. Getting to the Pokemon Center without Fly was so annoying. |

Oh god, I hated that one too. (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ Plus Fuschia City, Hakurei? Flipside from Super Paper Mario. I love it's theme and how it looks, but the way you get around is so effin' long, even with the pipes. I suppose they couldn't do a lot considering it was a platformer, but it's definitely my least favourite town in the Paper Mario games. Lavaridge Town from Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald. Apart from the Hot Spring, it had nothing notable and looked bland. I know it's a Pokemon game, but I think that was more because it got hyped up a bit by the game 'IT'S THIS PLACE YOU SPEND FOUR HOURS OR SO TRYING TO REACH WHILE BEATING THE EVIL TEAM', weird as that sounds. XD; That's pretty much all I can think of right now. |

Oh God. Now that I think about it, LoD's towns in general were all really bad. D: Also, I really, really want to say Zerard from Rogue Galaxy, but I can't. Sure, it's excessively big to the point that there's six seperate save points/teleporters(more than most dungeons in the game), but it was also so [radio edit]ing detailed and just wow. D: |

I remember the city from Sonic DX being bad, I think the one in Sonic Chronicles is worse though. |

D'aw, I loved Station Square. =< I disliked what they did to it in Sonic Chronicles though. They pretty much made a random backwater town and said 'Hey, let's call it Station Square!' despite that it looked nothing like the original. ._. |

I may be a bit biased against it as I somehow managed to keep getting stuck in walls >_> "Woohoo! I'm making progre-WTF..." |

That can be blamed in part to the horrible blurred graphics in most towns. But Lohan just has an awful design anyway. Finding the Stardusts there is just like (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ |

One in the hidden passage in the building with the giant bird. One in the pots right at the start of the place. One in the baskets across from the chest when you're going to the competition place. One in the armor upstairs int he shop of that one merchant guy you saved. That's all. |

XD Story of Sonic Adventure... either that or you fall through the wall to your death. Fuchsia city was bad, but the zoo kind of made up for it. :3 Sootopolis was frustrating to move through, but not bad. Altamira from Tales of Symphonia was a bit disorganized. |

Can't think of any specific examples right now, but basically any town where moving around is tediuos via either things like twisting pathways, forcing you to get on, say, vehicles or anything of the sort to transition between sections (in games where this isn't a normal mechanic it's a glorified loading screen). Oh yeah, and also towns where things are spread around haphazardly, like the hub area in Digimon World 4. All the shops should be on the same screen, not spread out over three or four, dammit (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ |

In general, I can't think of specific examples, but there are key things to look out for that make for bad towns. Like Gilgamesh said, any place that requires some kind of non-conventional method to get around because it's so sprawled out and difficult to navigate normally is usually bad. Places where everything is sprawled out despite the fact that there's not a lot to do in there is also annoying. Towns tend to be breaks in the action, after all, so big ones with little purpose just make me shrug. Doubly so if the game itself, however, is at fault for making movement monotonous. I can stomach bad towns in games where you at least move fast, but if you're playing a game where the character moves at a sloth-like pace than any town will drive you insane pretty quickly. |

I dunno, I actually kinda like Deling City and Esthar in FFVIII because of how large they are (admittedly being able to get in fights in Esthar is pretty annoying, but that's what Enc-None is for). Though navigating both of those cities is also a part of the plot so it makes some sense for them to be larger. |

I second Fuchsia City as a modicum of bad, bad design choices. That one bit during the Cloud/Aerith section of Midgar is annoying because there's just no way to tell where the doors are without hitting Select. Also, in general, any PSX-era RPG where the paths are built into the background/foreground and not immediately noticeable. That's a [radio edit]. |

Redcliffe in Dragon Age. It's not a confusing map really, but it's really big tO walk across without a run function, and the first gorram half mile of the place is nothing. Also, I missed the like, 100% completion my first time through because I missed some houses with time-sensitive quests in them. I always explore everything, and I missed them, it was like they were hidden. Plus the skeletons and stuff. Screw Redcliffe. |
