So… my botany professor has really been pushing me to shoot for this. It's the pathway to my lifelong dream of going and working in the Amazon. I've always admires Schultes immensely, but I never thought I could possibly get to being an ethnobotanist because life kept intervening in strange ways – my current botany professor, the one who teaches a fantastic ethnobotany class, transferred to a school out west to do more research than teaching, only to come back unexpectedly for my senior year; no cultural anthropology professor for my entire career at the college (we just hired a replacement to come next fall). These sort of combined and made me give up on that sort of life-path. But, despite not having the same amount of formal training in botany and ethnographic research, my botany professor urges me to pursue this, saying that I have the sort of mind and enthusiasm and drive and broad spectrum knowledge (not to mention that human ecology, my school's only major, closely mirrors ethnobotany, but is broader). He thinks I could be the next E. Wade Davis, a personal hero of mine. So I'm going to do everything I can to make my application excellent over the course of the next year, and apply to the New York Botanical Gardens graduate program for the following year (so, spend a gap year doing internships, beefing up my Spanish and Japanese to good levels, taking the GREs, getting more references, etc). But yeah. I plan to be an Ethnobotanist and go to the Amazon. |

Good luck with that, Gwydion! My combined areas of study come close to covering human ecology, so I'd be excited as an ethnobotanist, too! ;D Are you graduating later this year? |

Yeah! I'm probably going to stand at graduation in the spring, only because I have internship work that is unfinished, and need time that I'm not doing my usually crazy load of work (read: writing, composing sound and music for, and recording an audiobook with myself as narrator; plus other classes; plus orchestra; plus chorus; plus Resident Advisor duties; plus Student Life Committee secretarial duties; plus plays; plus trying to have some semblance of a life, though I'll still be trying to do that). But I should have my diploma sometime between June and August, methinks. |

It is an infinitely comforting thing, to have a direction and plan for what you wish to do, no matter how broad. Glad to hear you've found one. Good luck with seeing it through.

Well, that's getting a bit ahead of myself, but I'll definitely plan for the skeeters when I go there. Because I WILL go there. |
