Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

[SSB] What are your thoughts on video game piracy?

I doubt anyone here can actually say they support it, since it's very obviously not justifiable (not that it stops anyone from doing it =P), but do you hate those who do it or what?

I don't hold it against anyone since I'm guilty of it myself. However, I only pirate older games; I actually am rather against pirating games on certain consoles (pretty much the current-gen ones). I may be poor, but as they say, be content with what you have. I have too many games in my backlog anyway; I don't need more right now. lol

As I said though, I am guilty of video game piracy; I download SNES, GBA, and PS1 games mainly, and I have burned a few PS2 games to DVDs. I also don't consider it as severe an act as physical theft, something I would never do, no matter what it is. Not trying to justify it, nor am I trying to start any arguments, I'm just answering my topic question.

Miral.

On that note, I'm kind of against it, but I still do it from time to time. Mostly just with older games or games that haven't been released in the States, though.

Not against it with old games that are only sold on ebay, or are on old cartridges that don't function well, etc. Company wouldn't profit from it as far as I can tell, and it keeps their games alive.
Games that just came out, no.

Any game you buy pre-owned doesn't support the company.

Older games, fine. Newer games, no.

Only games I've pirated where games I already owned but don't work anymore(PC ports of Sonic 2/3) and a few games that I plan to buy someday (such as MegaMan Zero 2, and I now own the Zero Collection). With the exception of the MegaMan X4/5 and Tales of Eternia, I'd have to import though, which is why I did it (Fate/Stay Night). I do plan on buying whatever I keep someday though (at this point the only things I have that I haven't ever owned is MegaMan X4/5/Legends 2 and Fate/Stay Night).

Anyway, these are all older games (your mileage may vary on whether this applies to F/SN; it came out in 2004) and all of them are out of print (I dunno about F/SN), so the company didn't lose any money anyway; that kind of piracy doesn't really bother me.

This post was pretty much a long winded way to say that I don't mind piracy if the person's going to buy the game eventually/there is no way the company can lost profits from it.

Old games like Earthbound for instance, I've got no problem with since they're not getting money off it anymore, and there's really no other way to play them. Newer games that are still easy to get, I'm against.

I also emulate games if I have a copy but it doesn't work, such as Sonic Battle. ;_;

when i was 12 i really wanted pokemon leaf green but i had like no money, so i bought a 'cleverly translated' copy from ebay. Everyone's dumb whenthey're 12, so sue me.
The cartridge looked real enough, it could have been a second hand japanese game that they ran through some dodgy program, I dunno. It didn't work anyway, Professor Oak spoke some apalling English for a while and then everthing was just code

Other than that, nope, never got a pirated game
It's just something that's never really interested me, and have no real reason to try, so I just don't /o/

I'm with Kiki though, though often the games do get rereleased so /o/

I've pirated old games that I own, like Zelda's Link's Awakening, Zelda I/II, Oracle series, ALTTP, as well as the first two DWM games. I've also pirated old games that seemed like they'd never come to America – the SNES Dragon Quest games, mainly: SNES reboots of DQI, DQII, DQIII (which I actually owned the GBC DWIII variation of), and DQV and DQVI. Now that V and VI are coming out/came out on DS, I plan to buy both, though I still prefer the DJap translations most of time.

Most of the time, I frown on Piracy, with the exception of if I have something but can't use it anymore, or it would be difficult to use it, or if it's nearly impossible to get in America, because you'd have to go to a back-ally flee market in Akihabara or something. In those cases, I consider it 'temporary piracy,' with the full intention of buying it in the future.

Though fanscanlations of manga work a bit differently. I fully and freely read. I should be ashamed.

I've pirated older games and games that I already own, like most people. However, I also pirate games I cannot get (not released in Australia), games I plan to get but am unable to get at the time due to money issues (right now, Dark Dawn) and sometimes I will download random games when I'm bored, however the third category I delete the games 24 hours after downloading them, which IS legal... At least, I'm pretty sure it is in the US. Not sure in Aus.

Also note, I only pirate DS or GBA games. The only emulator that's ever properly worked for me without crashing my computer/laptop is a GBA emulator, and for DS games I have a flashcard.

What everyone else has said. I pirate old games or games for systems that are discontinued.

By the way, I think this topic can be expanded to music, movies and such. Those can be pirated too.

If left blank, your default title currently will be: Phasmatis of Elementum

I don't really like piracy even though I am kinda guilty of it myself. If I pirate a game, it is because I have heard good things about it and I want to try it out before I spend cash on it. I do admit that I have pirated most Japanese games that haven't seen the light of U.S. , like Tales. Kinda like even though I am getting flashcard for the DS and I really want to play Dark Dawn, I decided to emulate it just to see an hour or so of it, then I will wait until I get the money to buy it, which hopefully will be very soon.

So yeah, I also don't mind games if they are really old or impossible to find, because I do find myself constantly replaying Pokemon Yellow just to have the pleasure of getting a Mew.

Who moved this? Jesus, if topics as tame as this qualify for SSB then General Discussion might as well be renamed Pointless Gibberish 2.

I posted it here, just because piracy discussion can get quite heated.

If you don't feel it belongs here, then move it.

I had been quite certain that when I first saw it it was in plain old GD. I probably got it confused with some other tab I opened at the same time.

I pirate PC games. I don't have the means to buy them over the internet, since my mother abhors the idea of purchasing things through it, and I have seen only one original PC game here in Ecuador, which was the original Starcraft, which I bought. I don't know of any stores that sell original PC games, and I've asked around, in many places.

If I have the chance, I buy the game. Last summer in England I bought Fallout 3, which I had pirated before, and I bought Starcraft 2. And I have Sims 3 and Age of Empires 3 (and KOTOR 2 which never worked on either of my computers) The problem is that I very rarely have the chance. There are millions of places to buy pirated games for any console in Ecuador, but there are extremely few places that sell originals. It's not the right or best thing to do, but I have no choice. I try when I can, but mostly, I can't.

^Good thing you were able to buy SC2, since it's very hard, if not impossible to pirate (the single player can be pirated, but multiplayer is a different story entirely).

Yeah, I knew that from the start. But beyond that, I really, really wanted to own the original.

kind of what everybody said except I got a copy of SC2 via torrents before /donthate

It was a bad one, and multiplayer, including vs bots, was disabled, so I just played campaign and then deleted it.

Other than that I've never really done anything like that for recent stuff.
