Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

Easy vs. Difficult games

Giraffes are adorable.

This is also being posted in another forum I frequent. But since that is the first topic I ever made over there (my 2 April fools Day topics do not count) I may not get any posts at all. I do post a bit in the video games forums though, so I wonder what will happen? I made the topic because of the interesting posts I read about both difficult and easy games. Seeing that here people complain about the lack of difficulty of Dark Dawn I think it would be fitting to make a similar post here. It's basically unchanged except for the added parenthesis at the underlined area.

I post and read replies from the Golden Sun Dark Dawn thread and the Donkey Kong Country Returns thread (other forum I visit) which each respective game is worlds apart when it comes to difficulty. GS is an easy game while DKCR is, for most players, a difficult game. And I see for both there can be complaints for a game being too easy and complaints for a game being too difficult. It appears that it is very difficult to find the fine balance that can make everyone happy.

What are your opinions on games' difficulty? Must all games be hard/easy for you or does it depend on the genre as it does for my case? I personally prefer reasonably difficult platformers (not cheap difficultly as is common in many romhacks) and RPGs that I can play without tedious level grinding.

Ultimately for me the question ends up being not how difficult the game is but how enjoyable it is. Every time I beat a difficult level in a platformer I breath a sigh of relief and do a silly little celebration for a job well done. If I had a long day of doing things like schoolwork or my job, I like to relax with an easy game instead of a difficult game which would only frustrate myself even further.

I prefer difficult, otherwise the game goes by too easy and I won't enjoy it as much. Of course, if I feel that it's too difficult I just give up or cave in and switch to a lower difficulty setting. I want my games to present a challenge, not to intentionally prevent me from winning.

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

I tend to find larger-scale strategy games incredibly difficult (even though I love the series, I have serious issues getting through Green Earth's campaign mode in Advance Wars 2). I still enjoy them, though, if the gameplay isn't overly complicated and makes sense.

Overall, I like when a game challenges me, but I don't like it when the difficult is so high that I have to, rely on luck and think like a tactical genius for every level. That's my big problem with LOTR: The Third Age--it's across that difficulty line between "challenging but doable" and "[radio edit], I've had to restart this map five times now."

tl;dr I like games difficult enough that I can't just beat them in my sleep, but still a little on the easier side. I'm such a casual.

This, and also what TC said about not wanting to do tedious level grinding in RPGS. To be honest, I play RPGs for the stories more than anything, so I'd prefer the gameplay not get in the way but instead be an enjoyable way of passing the time between cutscenes. And I have bad reaction times and am not especially dexterous, so if a game relies too much on those skills, it frustrates me. I want to be challenged, want to think, but I am more interested in games for exploring new worlds and such, not just the feeling of reward for completing an objective. Of course, the better the reward in terms of things I enjoy (new areas unlocked, a really cool plot development), the more of a challenge I'll feel motivated to overcome. I think this paragraph was kind of disjointed.

Depends on the Genre. RPGs rarely have a challenge these days, so it's a nice refresher to play one that's actually reasonably tough, like Earthbound and Mother 3, just about any Ys game, TLA's Hard Mode and Lost Odyssey. As for other games... well, it's great to have a challenge, as long as it isn't TOO bad. I dislike things being overly difficult or complicated. :c

I definitely enjoy games that aren't really tough, but difficulty is one of the major factors for whether or not I will consider a game one of my favorites.

Even "Cheap" difficulty doesn't bother me too much in platformers. In other genres it's not cool though.

As long as it doesn't border on either "That was easier than SMB 1-1" or "WTF that makes Touhou on Lunatic look like Kirby Squeak Squad" it's ok.

TLA's Hard Mode is reasonably tough
What

I prefer the game be hard enough that I don't clear it in a few hours, but not to the point that I have to spend five times the amount of time preparing to do one part of a level than it takes to the the rest of it. I don't mind level grinding, so long as it doesn't take a few hours or something. Platformer wise and such, let's just say [radio edit] Eggmanland :argh:

By that I meant only certain parts of it. Like most of the earlygame before you get Revive, and the Tundaria region. (or maybe I underlevel for that part I dunno)

It depends on the game for me really, if it's something like a Rpg game I expect it to give me some form of difficulty higher then I would want for a more casual game that had multiplayer. Although the tougher the game the more I love it when I finally beat it.

After having beaten God Hand and Prinny, I feel like I can handle anything. Except Monster Hunter.

Although I do prefer easier games in general, as I pretty much suck at gaming.

That is how I know you've never played Prinny, Boyd. That is how I know. Oh God, it's like all your horrors brought to life.

I beat Zero 3 on Hard Mode. After beating it on Normal Mode literally 15 times.

Hey. Jackal, I bet you never fought Kim, Chi, and Anise on Hell's Finest, did you? You don't know true terror until then.

Thanks Poui.

I like difficulty depending on the game. For instance, I don't mind losing over 100 of my 1000 lives to Chefbot 9000 in Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero mainly because the game is fun and it's not because the boss is impossible; I'm just not skilled enough yet to beat it. And Dark Dawn and the like are fun for me, yeah they may be easy, but I don't have the patience for grinding, 'cause like Draco said, I'm in it for the plot and the characters, and as Boyd said, I don't want to spent 5 hours preparing for one hour of actual gameplay, when all the preparation is is 'RUN AROUND IN CIRCLES AND ENDLESSLY BEAT UP BAD DUDES'

I wasn't saying the Zero games were harder than Prinny, I was just saying that I wouldn't call somebody that can beat those games on Hard Mode a lousy gamer :U

Also shut up Jackal you can't even beat MegaMan X.

Eversion kept lagging on my shitty-ass computer thanks to the damn stream. I played it again after that, I can actually do pretty well at it.
