I'd rather be outside.

You know, sometimes I wonder how long it would take for two separate human populations with no contact with the other to become unable to produce non-viable offspring with the other group. ... in other words, how long it would take Homo sapiens to become something else. >_> [/tangential] |

Doubt that, Fluff. A Species can differentiate rather quickly, if it is separated from breeding groups for enough generations. It would take far less than billions – less than millions. Probably only thousands of years, if separated and put under enough different conditions to evolve separately. The problem for humans is that we medicate, so we defy natural selection, so we don't change all that much genetically. In any case, Darwin HATED slavery. He utterly ABHORRED it. He almost lost his passage on The Beagle in argument with a Christian Fundamentalist, slavery-loving, racist bigot who was the Captain of The Beagle. Luckily, the guy let his temper cool down, and Darwin never spoke so passionately about his liberal-beliefs in front of the captain again. |

Oh, I know. I think he was making a statement on how ridiculous our species is, though. How long it takes us to do anything right. Which makes sense. But I think, theoretically, it could take much less time. Not as quickly as Finches on different islands, of course: we have longer life spans and longer gaps between generations. |
