I lost some respect for Annie in this chapter, to be honest. Accepting the school-related punishment is one thing, that's reasonable and maybe even mature, given what she did to earn those consequences. But allowing her father to walk all over her because of some mindless "love" he's done nothing to earn? Just handing over control of Renard, which he has no authority to commandeer, especially seeing as the court hasn't done jack about it until now? Majorly aggravating.

It's my thought that her father's got some element of control overAnnie - the stinger, which has been known to forecast future events before, shows Annie's hair cut off - and her hair extended into infinity is a sign of her using etheric powers, which is a sign of her acting as a fire elemental. Further, her father's shown to have done -something- to incapacitate her fire elemental aspects in the past, which knocked her unconscious and required Zimmy to help release. And those bones were shown again in this chapter, briefly. Therefore, I think something he's doing is suppressing Annie's confidence artificially. Signs seem to be pointing to that, at least. Also, anyone else note that Coyote's true form seems to be that of a coyote's skeleton? |

I'm not convinced Coyote has a Final Form. But whenever he is supposed to appear particularly raw and genuinely powerful, Tom does tend to draw him as a skellington. I've always it thought it was an artistic choice, but it could be more. Annie is a wimp. That's what I've learned. We've always known that she's gotta be stunted by the early death of a mother plus and absentee father. Her emotional age has always been portrayed as being behind the curve. Now it's come home to roost. We are seeing Annie act in emotional capacity that's more suitable for somebody ten years her junior. |

Also, I don't think control of Renard is able to be passed. And I was also referring to the fact that when Coyote mentions his own... Creation, I suppose? As a myth spawned upon a man in his dying breaths as he sees a coyote sitting in the short distance, waiting to devour his cadaver. I can't remember the specific line and my current brain-blasted mind doesn't feel up to scrounging the archive to find it, but I think Coyote mentioned something about that coyote being dead or something like that? I have an association of death with that coyote anyway. |

Mm, it has been implied that Coyote has no inherent life of his own, but that he rather is a being of pure Ether; i.e. a creation given power by human emotion and spiritual substance. So a skeleton would not be out of theme for him at all. I rather hope that Renard indeed cannot be "passed on." That would go horribly awry if Anthony caused the conditions under which Renard went under Annie's control to be replicated in such a way that Renard would be under his control. idk if that's even possible, and I'm sure it would be convoluted. At this point, though, Anthony would see no trouble doing something like that. |

The reason Annie has control of him is because she owns the wolf toy he inhabits. I guess that just givin the toy to her father isn't passing ownership of the toy, it's more akin to like... a parent confiscating a toy due to its misuse. I dunno, somethin' like that. But mebbe not, this is all theoretical-like. |

http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1538 Today's page was really well done. I love the expressiveness of the fire elemental, the different perspectives on the cut hair, and that flashback to talking to Ysengrim. |

I do like it because even I can't tell what the right path here is. Maybe there is none. Some people DO survive by internalizing antagonizing feelings sotically, though that can leave them with problems down the line. But I think like monasticism or asceticism. Some people have to learn to accept and pass through their emotions. I do know that Antimony desperately wants her father's approval, and placed him on a pedestal. She savagely attacked Reynard emotionally and tossed Zimmy across the room for daring to besmirch him, and now that he's here she's cut herself off from everyone, and even gone so far as to jettison all self confidence. Kat is really the only thing keeping her here. I think Tony is a terrible father, but not a terrible person. He might suffer from an inability to understand or recognize feelings or empathize with others, or even understand his own feelings - mild sociopathy. All he has to go on is outdated ideas of what a good father is like (which, at the time he grew up in, probably the 70's, would've been an authoritarian humphry bogart type) by action. Being bad at dealing with your emotions seems to run in Antimony's family. |
