If you had to pick the best DS game, which would it be and why?

A2 got praised over at IGN, maybe you should consider giving it a try, Ravenbolt. A2 is one of the best FF games ever made, IMO.

Aria of Sorrow is right up there as far as "best Castlevania games" lists go. Dawn of Sorrow isn't quite as good in my opinion, but I still liked it a lot, so both are worth playing... or even just the one. Again, Portrait of Ruin felt really lackluster to me, whereas Order of Ecclesia seemed to be on the right track and I was enjoying that until I had to return my friend's copy.

As for FFTA2... I liked it, I did, but it's not perfect. The story and characterisation is minimal to non-existent and some of the missions will make you grind your teeth to nothing, but failing that the gameplay is excellent and the system is really good. It doesn't compare to the original FFT, but it is still an exceptionally good game and well worth your time. Since it's missing those critical elements regarding plot, though, I feel it'll never be the *best* game on the system.

Oh, of course. Those are all valid complaints (except the characterisation, I thought that was quite good), especially the bit about some missions being really, well, mean. There's no nice way to put that. Like being surrounded by thieves when the law is "Don't get stolen from."

I have yet to play any game that I would consider near perfect, though, and the ones I listed are just the closest I've seen on the DS yet, despite their failings.

My problem I had with FFTA2 is that I ended up liking how Disgaea played, and then Disgaea DS came out... Meh.

I may pick it up someday to actually give it a serious playthrough, I've done both FFT and FFTA.

I think part of the problem, Squee, is that while I liked FFTA and FFTA2... well, their job system was on par with if not slightly better than FFT, but plot and word and characters for FFT is damn near the finest delivery that the entire Final Fantasy series at large has ever seen. It's set kind of a high bar.

But as you say, no game is truly perfect.

So I've heard, yeah. It's one of the reasons I really want a PSP, so that I can see what all the fuss is about.

I'd probably like FFT if I played it more, but the gameplay just seems really... eh to me. Not sure why. Part of it is probably because it's difficult and actually requires me to strategize if I want to win without all of my units dying permanently. >_>

Well, to me the best game will always be the ones I had the most fun with, and that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with characterization or the game being 'perfect.' They are games after all, and if I have loads of fun with a game, then it is definitely one of the best. *nod*

For sure, second only to Super Castlevania IV in my book. Then CV3 and then Symphony. Note that I have yet to play any of the DS titles though.

One Castlevania I feel is underappreciated is definitely Circle of the Moon. My first Castlevania and probably my favourite to this day <3 I like how it's got so many different modes for replayability. Plus the DSS system was pretty cool.

I am ashamed of everybody who did not bring up Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents. Seriously guys what the hell.

Not even kidding either, those are probably the games that I had the most fun with. Close seconds include Heart Gold, The World Ends With You, Dragon Quest IX... plenty of great games on the system, really.
I would've responded with this if I noticed this topic earlier. Seriously, it's the only game I ever considered importing. I was really bad at it when I began rhythm games, but it became immense fun after the learning curve was achieved. The humor is pretty good, too.

It comes a a very close second to my other favorite game: Meteos. Three blocks lined up = rocket ship? Reason why I bought a DS in the first place.

Honorable mentions include Professor Layton, Kirby Canvas Curse and Superstar Ultra, Pokemon Platinum... I'll just stop because I'd really be listing my favorite DS games.

Anime was a mistake

Because I'm always at least 4 years behind with any system, I got a DS on Friday, as well as Soul Silver and DQ IX. Loving them both right now.

Despite any hopes and dreams I may have had, the reimagining of Lufia 2 was not the best game on the system. Far from it. *sighs* I was hoping that after such a long wait it wouldn't end up being so mediocre, but there you go.

Yeah, I heard from quite a few people that the Lufia 2 remake was pretty meh.

I don't know. Something about it just feels... lacking. The combat is basically just repeat the same combo over and over and over until you win, and avoid the enemy in between combos if you don't knock them down to avoid the berserking. Skills and magic are meh, the mystic board for character customisation is extremely lackluster and the ability to change it mid-fight doesn't make it strategic, it means you just move all the bonuses to the character you're presently using if you so wish.

The difficulty curve is a little weird - dungeons are easy, bosses are easy, then SUDDENLY SUPER HARD BOSS WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY A NOT WINNABLE FIGHT which you have to win and it demanded all my items and heaps of cheap tactics, then it's back to being super easy. They changed the order of the dialogue and scenes and stuff a little bit, which isn't necessarily bad but it just somehow feels lacking in this day and age. The puzzles are also pretty average and easy to figure out, but assuming you screw up and use the Reset button, it doesn't work as nicely as it did in the original where it just fixes up the one puzzle... it resets the entire room, all the chests, all the enemies, and all your experience. And some rooms have had up to five puzzles, which was the most frustrating thing when I stuffed up the final one.

Overall, I adored Lufia 2 but I don't even think I have the patience to stick around long enough to even get to the wedding scene, let alone the end of the game. I will say that the redesigned Idura is awesome and Selan is now a total badass deserving of the rep she gets in the original. Really, though, I'm just going to go back to my SNES version if I want nostalgia.
