In theory, yes, as evolution is a constant process. However, the human race hasn't been around nearly long enough for our different populations to have any drastic differences. The most noticeable difference, skin color, is entirely based on the location of the population. Darker skinned populations originate from near the equator and skin tone just gets lighter the farther away you go. Sure, there are some facial features you could probably say are stereotypically African or Asian or whatnot, but none of these really affect our lives. Most species cannot survived in environments they aren't adapted to. A polar bear from Alaska would roast in the Sahara desert because it's not adapted to it. However, take a human from Alaska and he'll survive just fine in Egypt, albeit with a probably less comfortable lifestyle. Basically what I mean to say is that we humans as a species are still similar enough to each other that we can adapt to any sort of environment and the few that we can't, no one can. tl;dr-Over long periods of time the human race could change, but as of now despite racial differences we're too biologically similar to have a "superior" race. |

That's a good post, Boyd, but it really don't have anything to do with eugenics. >_> Eugenics is the systematic "breeding out" of certain traits in humans so that the species or population as a whole we be more biologically fit. For example, preventing people with bad eyesight from breeding, or preventing those with chronic genetic illnesses from being able to reproduce. |

Yes. I want bat-wings. Okay but seriously I'm with Adnarel. The closest thing humans are getting to evolution these days is a social hierachy :U |

Same as Andy. I mean, it would be good to eliminate genetic diseases, or bad eyesight, but it would be pretty inhumane. Wait I wear glasses ffff |

Bahaha, I was totally thinking of something else. Man, I'm retarded sometimes. Be proud of yourself. You got something against glasses? *ahem* Right, thinking now. I don't think it'd be possible to do all this; aside from the sheer scale of people with genetic defects like that, not only can we not see recessive genes (like how women can carry a gene for being colorblind but not actually be colorblind), but random mutations are still possible :U So, no point in trying, really... |

Unless we just DESTROY ALL HUMANS. In concept, and viewed objectively, it's an interesting idea. But hell no IRL. |

Given what we've done with selective breeding over the ages, turning the fearsome gray wolf into the yippy Chihuahua - and, more recently, in only sixty years Belyaev successfully domesticated foxes that display doglike qualities, I don't doubt that eugenics could breed a "better" human, however you'd like to define "better" - a more accomplished sprinter, piano player, physicist, or whatever you're aiming for. The problems I see are twofold: first and foremost, any eugenics program beyond simply encouraging certain people to breed more or less (possibly with tax incentives?) would be a monstrous violation of human rights, because it would necessarily involve forced sterilization, forced choice of mate, or restricted\mandatory breeding. Second, within the next century, the much slower-paced eugenics will be rendered obsolete by genetic engineering. Why spend several generations of selective breeding to increase the percentage of the population carrying the RLYSMRT1 allele (not, as far as I know, a real gene) when you can custom-build a fetus guaranteed to carry it? Thus, even ignoring the moral issues, reviving eugenics is pointless. |

I figure selective breeding is bad, although Eugenics isn't the worst, in the sense that you could just do some kind of gene therapy. Not like a "build-your-own" baby thing, (well, almost) but a selective gene processing from the two parents and the best genes would be used and... I know what I'm trying to say, but I'm repeating myself too much to be clear. Anyway, science could do it. The problem with this is, however, the fact that if every human in the world eventually became a great athletic, creative, caring physicist, who would dig ditches? The world needs ditch diggers. |
