I'd rather be outside.

I mean, I've known that their character contests aren't "who is the best character?" but rather "who has the most fanboys?"

But to see Pokémon Platinum beating Metroid Fusion in the Game of the Decade contest made me do a double take. I did the same thing when Mother 3 lost to Devil May Cry. I should have known this all along, but the contest is really called "who has the most fanboys?"

Just because you hate the new Pokemon games :(

But yeah, Mother 3 shouldn't have lost <_<

Metroid Fusion sucked, though. I can see why Platinum beat it. Super Metroid would have kicked its ass, though. Too bad it's too late.

To be fair, Metroid Fusion still divided fanbases considerably. Many of those who loved Metroid for the sense of getting completely and utterly lost in an alien world found that being talked to by a computer and having the area divided into sectors with rough ideas of where to go rather than being an out-and-out free for all against the environment wasn't as entertaining. I'm not one of those - I adored Fusion - but it was still not regarded as the absolute best Metroid game. To many, that title is reserved for Super Metroid or Metroid Prime, whichever one takes your fancy more. Contrast that to Pokemon Platinum, which is widely regarded as one of the most in-depth, interesting, and best of the Pokemon games to date by a great deal of people... well, yeah. It's largely fanboys but still, there's a lot of wriggle room to argue there.

Mother 3 is probably suffering a lot simply because so few people have played it. GameFAQs is a western website for predominantly English-speaking backgrounds, and this is a game in a series which is known for being comparatively quirky and out there with only ONE of the three games getting a western release. Mother 3 still has not and probably never will be released in English and only got a proper fan translation, what, a year ago? While almost everyone who has played it would choose it over Devil May Cry, there's just not enough people out there to recognise its genius. By contrast, Devil May Cry is popular and has its fanboys, but that's not for no reason whatsoever. It may be a dark, gritty action game, but it is a very good one and it deserves at least some of the reputation and fame it gets.

Ah well. As much as I'm playing devil's advocate here, I do agree with you. But at the end of the day, it's just a popularity contest. Whoever has the most fanboys wins.

Agreed. I've never played Mother 3 at all.

Which is a shame as Mother 3 is fantastic. I finished it about a month ago or so, and really enjoyed it. It was kinda lacking in the freedom department though. One of the hardest RPGs I've played to date though.

lol gamefaqs contests

Mother 3 lost, therefore the whole contest is null.

Also Platinum should be a separate entry from Slow Diamond and Laggy Pearl.

Well, they kept Pokémon entries to one per generation. So Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum made it in. I do applaud them for that.

Point taken on Metroid. But Mother 3... that one's legitimately hard for me to swallow. I really recommend it, Role. I've never talked to anybody that's played it who's been disappointed in it. It's got all you need: great gameplay, a mind-bendingly powerful story, evocative music, and a real challenge as a game. Oh, and it's got very fun graphics.

This. Mother 3 is an amazing game and I recommend it to any RPG fan.

The difference between Mother 3 and Devil May Cry is that the latter is ridiculously over-the-top while the former is just ridiculous.

Wait, you honestly expected Mother 3, a game (that yes, is great) that didn't even come out in America, to do well in a contest on an American website? The large majority of the voterbase doesn't even know what Mother is. The fact that it got more than 20% surprised me.

Also Adna you've never even played Pokemon Platinum so lol your opinion on that; it actually is better than Fusion (which is still a good game, just not at Platinum's level). Platinum's not better than Zero Mission or Super, though.

/contest junkie who could probably go on more about this if he really wanted to

Mother 3 is indeed fantastic and I back up any suggestions that it should be played. But again, with no American release, Crash is right. That it got that many votes is quite a feat... it was never fated to win a contest on an American website, though. There are heaps of people who aren't even aware of the relation to it and Earthbound, after all.

If not for the rule that the first round pictures were all just the cover art, it might have done even better with a picture of Lucas, since some would recognize him from being in Smash Bros. As it is, all M3 got was a bright red square that said "MOTHER 3" in the corner.

How so? On the hardness front.

Enemies tend to deal a crapton of damage to you, and your means of healing are limited as each character can hold only 15 items (and duplicates take up seperate spaces) and Healing spells use up a lot of precious PP. So it's often quite difficult keeping up with the damage you take.

I've lost three points so far. One of them really shouldn't have happened, I think I mis-clicked and didn't realize it (it's the current match, WWF No Mercy vs Fire Emblem), one was completely unexpected (Deus Ex over Rock Band 2), and the last was a complete tossup (Street Fighter 4 over Sonic).

My battle entry had a couple picks different from my main bracket, and it's so far gone at this point it's not even worth discussing.

Oh concerning Mother 3 being hard, sounds like you weren't using buffs and debuffs. Use those like they intended, including against regular enemies at times, and most of the game is a breeze. Only struggles I had were Mr. Passion right toward the beginning, and a fight against the Masked Man, I think it's a Lucas-only fight IIRC.

Oh and FWIW No Mercy is actually a better game than Fire Emblem in my opinion. Awesome times playing that with some friends back in the old days, and I didn't even like wrestling.

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait.

Wait.

Crash. Did you bet against Deus Ex?! That game is regarded as one of the finest experiences ever made and is fanboyed so hard that there's no way it shouldn't have beaten Rock Band 2. Unless I'm misreading and you actually voted for it and it lost... in which case (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
