My Color Theory; It's sort of mind blowing...

So, since I was about 12 I have had this odd idea about color. It's a little complex, but I will trying and explain it on here. Basically the theory questions if the color our minds percieve object are actually the color the object truely is. Because color is the relection of light off a object. So, what if say an object is TRUELY green, but when light reflects off it, our eyes percieve it as purple.

So, I don't know let's debate this.

A quick note; this would definitely belong in general discussion.

And my cousin had a similar sort of idea - what if each person's particular colour was different? She wondered what if, say, my purple was her red, and my yellow her pink, but since we learned it that way our whole lives through we wouldn't realize it was different.

It's probably not true, but it's interesting to think about.

I thought the same way, haha. This theory can apply to more than just colour, I think... xD But I can't think of any ideas right now.

Lots of people have thought this. It is probably true. Read some Kant. Destroy Space and Time.

The Sin Thesis

The colours you see as red are most likely the same as the colours other people see as red; that is, people, when shown the same wavelength of light, will name it around the same colours (with fuzziness around the borders, of course).

How we 'perceive' them is a rather silly question: a non-question, even, like wondering if a smell or a pain is felt the same way.

Well, I wasn't saying this varied from person to person. If true this would remain almost constant in all people. So, yes the same to different people.

I agree read Kant he's a dude
but yeah there is such thing as colourblindness
and theres a guy in my school year who sees red as green and vice versa which would be woaaaah
grass would look evil and lipstick would be trippy
or would it?

bohohohoho...!

He's not talking about colourblindness though.

Take that colourblindness test that's just a few topics down from here. Say everyone you know gets 0-20 or so so you know they're all quite good at distinguishing colours from one another. It's just that what we all call red looks like what you call purple to me. But I call it red nonetheless.

Actually if I'm undertanding this, cupcake's theory is that what our eyes perceive as one color might actually be a different color, but because of the way light reflects of it our eyes see it as another color.

The one you're talking about was brought up separately, IIRC.

Ah, right.

... I don't understand what he means by that at all.

Like, the 'true' color of an object is blue, but because of some part of us, we see it not as blue but as, I dunno, purple with pink polka-dots. Although then I would argue, if it's something that affects the whole human race, that the color we are able to see is the true color of whatever object, and not the color that it really is. Because, well, we couldn't see it. Therefore it's pointless conjecture.

Beyond that, there are spectrums of color and light we as humans can't see, anyway.

Click this if you can't view the image.

@Artemis: Well, true, because the only way to see the "true color" would be to view it without ANY light. Which is impossible. But it is sort of thing that will always be a mystery really.

I get redirected to a sign-in page.

Oh and yeah, it does make sense for colours like ultraviolet.

Also I'd disagree with you, Arty. It'd be convenient to refer to said item as purple with pink polka-dots, sure, but if it's technically blue, it's technically blue. D:

Some animals do perceive colours differently, though. *nodnod* .

Oh yeah, reminds me that if human eyes were better at seeing violet light, that'd be closer to the colour of the sky to us.
