>_____________________________________> I'm no scientist, but it seems like they're mixing some stuff up. This "force of 100 million hydrogen bombs." sounds like bullshit. Especially since the continuation of the article mentions it will only affect electronic stuff (cell phones, GPS, radio.) So, maybe what they meant to say, before the initial fear mongering, was, "the electrical equivalent to 100 million hydrogen bombs." Since, it doesn't seem that anyone is expecting the solar storm to rip earth a new one. |

Well, "the force of 100 million hydrogen bombs" isn't really inaccurate; it's just that this isn't the type of energy that, say, is going to make the planet go asplode; it's just going to mess with magnetism and stuff. It's just a different type of force, that's all. Except yeah, I could see that being taken the wrong way >___>;; ...Yeah, they use the exact phrase "the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs" near the end, so yeah. The initial statement was probably just making use of that journalism technique where you open with a line that draws attention so people read the whole thing. But anyway, I've gone off topic. Suffice to say, there's really no way for me to debunk this theory seeing as how this isn't something I can measure myself from home. So all I can tell is that it's possible, but I can't say if it will actually happen or not :U |

Ah, yes, my philosophy professor was talking about this a couple of months ago. I heard the magnetic poles might shift. |

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

Enro'd the link, but from the sound of it, it's probably nothing to get worked up over. This is what the planet's magnetic field is for, after all--protecting us from the stuff like this that gets constantly thrown at Earth. |

Just saying, but doomsday-theorists will probably have a jolly good time. The earth has been hit by big solar storms before usually knocking out GPS and what not for a few hours. The magnetosphere shields away most of the particles. |

I hate articles like this. Journalists are uneducated [radio edit]wits. They should leave science writing to scientists trained in PR. This article very clearly blurs facts and instead of going from Point A to Point B, it goes from Point A to Point Q, or something. Thanks, Temple, this article just raised my blood pressure. |

I hate these articles too. It's mere sensationalism. And the uneducated and the gullible are so susceptible to it. Blarg. (I stand corrected if, come said storm, all technology is rendered useless and we all die horribly.) |

I think it's oversensationalised, like most of us here, but assuming that this storm does hit then there could very well be some significant damage. Overstated in the article, yes, but it might knock out a fair amount of electricity for a week. Maybe kill the internet, which would be a fate worse than death. Amusing that a solar storm is going to hit at the final year of the Mayan solar calendar, though. Lawl 2012. |

![]() In all seriousness, 100 million hydrogen bombs? The effect of a single hydrogen bomb, in terms of gross force, won't hit more than a few kilometres away. And, how big is the earth? Yeah, thought so. Admittedly, the force is still quite large, but that's what the magnetosphere is for. And, they didn't say it in the article, but, Solar Storms are not a single blast- they occur over time. As in, a few days. So, there may be the force of a 100 million hydrogen bombs, but, they're spread out over the whole earth, over several days. |

We had one of these back in 2008. That one, far as I know, didn't get any coverage at all. Silly, silly people and their 2012. Can't wait for that year. |

Even assuming it destroys all the satellites, we've survived without them before, we can survive without them again. If you want a doomsday thing for 2012, try again. This would be nothing more than a minor inconvenience. After all, there's this thing called SENDING SATELLITES INTO SPACE. After said storm is over, it's just a matter of replacing what was damaged. |

What I'm worried about is the end of certain Technology. It could easily be a chance for tighter regulation of the internets if the web gets blown out by this. It could be the end of anonymous freedom in cyberspace as we know it. |

I don't know what you're thinking Gwydd...It's would be a pretty fantastic leap from: Holy Shit, the sun is doing natural sun things that are not advantageous to us ----------------to----------------> Let's put up more regulations on the web on people, who had nothing to do with solar storms. That said, dumber things have happened. |
