Tips on getting users for a forum, that is. As some of you know, my forum was recently hacked, forcing everyone to go back to an older one I made in 2004. That's beside the point, though; the forum has a few active users, but I think it needs more. Every time I invite more people, they either register and leave immediately afterwards, or post a few times, then leave and only pop in every now and then to lurk or don't come back at all. I was lucky to get what active users I do have, I guess. We've only gotten like 1 or 2 more active users over the years, and the forum has been created for nearly six at this point. So...what should I do to get new users, if anything? The forum can be pretty lifeless and boring at times because of this. Not trying to sound like a whiner or something, I'm just looking for suggestions since this is one of the most active forums I've ever been a part of. |

We get new people as well as old users who are brought back with a notification e-mail. I'm one of those people who got the e-mail. |

We've tried the email method a few times. Most people never reply, the rest visit and leave again after a post or two. I should also mention that 90% of the active users on the site are the admins, and we currently have no moderators. <_< |

Simple has 6666 posts! And, Iunno. I know that I came from the Temple from lurking GameFAQs YEARS ago, without an account, then seeing some links again on GameFAQs last year, deciding to finallyy sign up. I guess, that's it. People are inviting people from other websites. Just mention your site a few times. Remind me later, I'll probably end up joinging, then >_> |

Advertising where, at the Temple? That's always been allowed. We used to have a subforum for it, but nobody looked in there, so we removed it and suggested people put their advertisement topics in GD where they'd get more attention (which is where all the old ad topics are now). |

Well, I just registered on the new one and am awaiting validation currently. But I think there'd be a lot of people here willing to join up, so... here would probably be a good place to start, yeah. |

Yeah, if anything, invite people who'll be interested in your forum/people you know well. For example, I go to an Earthbound forum and I always scout for those on other sites who show interest in the series and people I'm friendly with. Thing is, I haven't tried to coax anyone from here because the majority of the community there thinks Golden Sun is overrated. ^_^; |

See if you can affiliate yourself with other boards, too, like this one. |

Affiliates always help, yes. Like with TAoW - We got a bunch of new members from there, and some of us now go there as well. |

Oh, well then, I suppose I could advertise it, but that may be kind of pointless now. Affiliating does sound nice. |

Is this The Game Square forum that's in your profile? Well, just on a first note, I'd suggest changing the skin to something other than the default. It makes it look like you've put work and thought into the forum and that it's not a new community. Also, what's your board about? Video games? Gaming forums are a dime a dozen. You need some sort of hook that will keep people, a way to stand out. At the Temple it's our focus on Kraden in specific as well as the fact that we've got a very solid existing userbase that keeps the forum hopping. The first will eventually bring the second. I think you need to work on making the place uniquely attractive.

I'm a little slow, but where is this newer site of yours? It's not the same one in your GameFAQs contrib. info right? If I get the link, I can join and frequent the place. |

@Draco: Yeah, that's the forum. We do have some skins now; I'll explain what happened. We started out as an Invision forum, and we had several skins to choose from. Then we decided to upgrade to Zetaboards later, but we had no idea we were gonna move over to a new site. Once we created a new site in 2008, we all moved over there, and when the upgrade happened at the old one, we had already left and didn't care to add any skins to it or anything. We had several at the new forum as well, but lost a few of them due to the recent hacking. We got some of them back and put them in the old one; now we need to replace the default skin with one of the ones we currently have (I'm thinking Aqua Green). And yeah, it's pretty much just about gaming in general. Thanks for the tips! @Lævateinn: Well, no. I took the link out of my contributor page because that was the one that was hacked. We have an older forum of the same name that we had to move back to because of it, which is currently in my profile here at the Temple. Oh, and how would I go about getting TGS affiliated with this place? Edited by Super Slash, Aug 27 2010, 01:39 PM.

Sound the horn and call the cry: "How many of them can we make die?"

In my experience, a big part of getting forum members is luck. I've seen tons of interesting RP forums die because, for whatever reason, people just wouldn't join them. Basically, ¯\(º_o)/¯ |
