More importantly, I went book shopping. At Barnes & Nobles. So, I'm there, I'm lookin'. My ride is being all different sorts of impatient and annoying and is severely irritating the shit out of me. I decide I'll find Zafon, 'cause Draco suggested it. Found Shadow of the Wind and bought that so now my library is plus one Carlos Ruiz. It's apparently a bestseller. Who knew. So then I figure 'you know what, I wanna read the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya books. The light novels. Let me find those light novels.' I spend about five minutes searching before my ride is all 'Hurry up! Hurry up!' so we go find this employee guy and ask him where the light novels are. He literally has no idea what a Light Novel actually is. He asks if its the name of a series. I mentally facepalm and then tell him I'm looking for Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. He points me to the Teen Manga section. I spend about another five-ten minutes searching for said Teen Manga section. There is none. I go back to the guy, and he shows me a section marked 'Teen' but which has manga in it. Okay. I find Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The first three volumes. Of the manga. By this point I'm fairly certain B&N has not the light novels and I resolve to punch something in the face only in my mind before going and finding some random fantasy novel to read when I finish reading Shadow of the Wind. Mr. My-Ride was all 'What's the name of the series?' like fifteen times and he still kept asking even though I answered him every time. He finally stormed off and let me be. I just can't believe Barnes & Nobles doesn't have a bloody Light Novel section - or even Light Novels at all. I SWEAR I found one there before, but nope. Could not find. |

I don't believe I've ever found any there either. 'Course, I always make a beeline to the roleplaying games section, then to Pratchett, so it's not like I look that hard. |

Does anyone know if Borders has them? I could always go to Kinokuniya's at a mall, but that's like an hour away and I would NEVER be able to convince anyone to drive me there, so I'd have to wait 'til I can drive myself. |

I'd never heard the term before, nor do I think anything like that is sold in the local bookstores (around here at least). Maybe it'd be a better bet to order them off of Amazon or something, if you can. Huh? I thought graphic novels were just comics, Phoenix. I am so confused D: Edited by SeaMonkeyFarmer, Aug 23 2010, 02:40 PM.

Graphic novels are indeed comics. A light novel is a novel that has an occasional picture, as far as I know. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya began as a light novel. So did Shakugan no Shana. I wanted to read both, but freaking Barnes and Nobles. |

Barnes and Noble shelves the Haruhi Suzumiya books with the regular YA fiction. Also, hecks yeah, Zafon! The Shadow of the Wind is a true masterpiece, and everyone should read it.

Also, the reason the dude didn't know what a light novel is was because you were asking an American person about a term that is primarily Japanese in nature. I've never heard of a light novel in the West. |

I've seen a couple light novels before in B&N. There's been a couple times where I've spotted things like .Hack, Ballad of the Shinigami, Death Note (LABB Cases), and xxxHolic. Probably not what you're looking for, but those are things I've found. |
