So, a few weeks ago, my grandpa passed away. He was diagnosed with lung cancer on the fourth of July, and died two weeks later. He was old, had lived a full life, and it was time for him to go. He was a shadow of his former self mentally and physically, and, honestly, I was just happy that he didn't have to suffer anymore. He hadn't been the same since my grandma, his wife, had died 6 years ago. One thing that was really interesting about my grandpa is the fact that, up until the day he died, he played his SNES religiously. He used to play his NES constantly, but he had completely mastered the five games he had for it (Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: the Adventure of Link). His video game playing began as a way to bond with my older sister. In her childhood, after my mom divorced her first husband, they lived with my mom's parents for a while. She wanted an NES for Christmas, and she used to play it all the time with our Grandpa. It wasn't long before he was better at it than her. When the Super Nintendo came out, they bought it immediately. My sister and mom had moved out at this point, but my grandpa bought the system anyway, and began playing Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. He never really stopped playing it, continuing to explore Hyrule for the next two decades. He'd start a file up in the morning, and have the entire thing done by the evening, completely finishing everything. Even with his old age and rapidly diminishing memory, he still always had no trouble making a complete run through of the game, even as he struggled to differentiate between my mother and his deceased sister. Some of my fondest childhood memories are making the two hour drive to my grandparent's house, sitting down, and watching the master do his work. It amazed me as a child how he knew every secret, how he could effortlessly destroy any enemy, make it through even the most hazardous of rooms without losing so much as half of a heart. He played the game meticulously, with everything in a set order. I got a lot of hell in my younger days for killing too many or too few enemies, or going in room A before room B instead of vice versa. "God dammit, Jacob! You don't need to kill that little heimerdinger! Just let him be, and go to the next room, dammit!" I guess it's my way of playing tribute to him. I named a file "Grampa", started playing, and finished today. I got everything in the game, every heart piece, every optional item. I explored every cave, opened every treasure chest. I finished the game with the best possible equipment, max bombs and arrows (50 and 70 respectively), a full cache of 999 Rupees, four blue potions in my bottles, and without a single death. I even made it to the Chris Houlihah Room. It's my way of paying tribute to a man I was very, very close to. RIP, Grandpa. |

kickass /o/ Though I'm left to wonder if this isn't a copypasta... I dunno. I don't think so but a part of my paranoid mind thinks maybe. Kickass either way, and that man sounds like a great man. |

I will probably never know what to say to this. Your grandfather sounds like the coolest old guy I've ever heard of, and it's good to hear you were so close. I think he'd have been proud of your tribute to him. |

I'm kind of afraid that I killed something that I shouldn't, or got the heart pieces in the wrong order, but I did my best. =P |

Does being a dick come naturally to you, or do you have to work at it? I'm sorry for you, Were, but I'm glad you're at peace with his passing. Your grandpa sounds like he was a really interesting guy. I'm glad you thought enough to tell us about this. |

*salutes* Good sir, that was amazing. He sounded like such a cool guy, but at least he no longer has to suffer. And I commend you both a thousand times for having such incredible skill at such a brilliant game. |

Your grandfather sounded like a tremendously awesome guy, and I bet he's impressing someone up somewhere with his Link to the Past skills. What a way to send him off. Sorry to hear that he's gone, man. May his memory live on, and his skill in Zelda be something to aspire to! |

Incredible story and a sweet memorial. My grandparents are too distant for me to ever have a relationship like that, so that must've been nice. |

One interesting thing about his Link to the Past skills is that for all he could do, he couldn't beat Ganon <_<. I'd watch him try, for hours upon end, to defeat the fatass blue pig, but he just couldn't do it <_< Frustrated the hell out of him. |

Dude....your grampa was a total bro, and you paid tribute to him in what was quite possibly the best way anyone could've ever done. Seriously that is one high ranking act of bro-ism. I salute you good sir for the honor of telling me this magnificent story. I am deeply sorry for your loss and hope his aura of bro is retained in you even in your old age. |
