Life only has the meaning that you give it. That's why art exists. Because we give meaning to it. Because we like it. Because people's feelings connect with it. |

Yeah, I thought so. But the way this topic is constructed is as if it's trying to ask for some sort of universal objective meaning. |

Really, I'd have to side with the existentialists / nihilists. Life, for an individual is typically meaningless, assuming that religious beliefs are factored out (which is fair since they aren't verifiable through science (empirical evidence) or philosophy (logical progression) and rely on faith, which if philosophically hax.) About the issue of passing on knowledge though, one cannot provide a direct understanding to another person so as to bring them up to speed. That is to say, that even though science has progressed as far as it has, the average person, while knowing that they can contact a person from a telephone doesn't have the knowledge of how that technology works, certainly not to duplicate it for themselves. Thus, each individual person must find out all of the knowledge (empirical facts) and wisdom (experience) they desire through their own work. Meaning that while people progress, it's not as directly as we might think and the really important part of scientific and philosophical advances is mankind's ability to efficiently teach and demonstrate that knowledge. On happiness, I suppose, if you work from the standpoint that happiness is a state that is sustainable, then happiness is something to work for in life. |

Yeah, that was the whole, "really important part of scientific and philosophical advances is mankind's ability to efficiently teach and demonstrate that knowledge." thing that I was lacking. Also, if you think that was long, you should read: http://s9.zetaboards.com/The_Temple_of_Kraden/topic/7225746/1/#new |

Yep, it's through this logic my point was made. Chances are, you aren't going to directly important. The best thing you can do is to indirectly help that person, by possibly contributing to the thing that she or he does, by passing on knowledge. |

If you hold that we were created and placed here by alien beings of some sort, consider Raëlism. |

That's probably the post I would feel more related to. But, after so many years considering the "question" of the meaning of life, I've had felt so many answers as correct that I don't think I could just choose one of them. I think the meaning we give to life is just based of faith. It would be impossible for all of us to agree on the meaning of life further than that; but isn't it beutiful? That's why life rocks.

Personally, I think there is no "universal" meaning to life. It'd be difficult to create one, with so many different entities (countries, for example). If you're going on a personal level (which I guess was the main question in the first post), then I'm not sure about what life means yet. It's such a complicated, yet important question, and I don't feel up to really answering it for myself yet. Perhaps that's because I don't know what I want in life yet, so how can I attach a meaning to what I don't feel I'm a part of yet? I can only be optimistic for now. A meaning of life that's universal... For every country, every living being... I'd like to ask the counter question, "What is the meaning of DEATH?", and see what answers we get from that one. Maybe I should make a separate topic, but I think this question should also be considered when thinking about the meaning of life. After all, death makes life meaningful. |
