Someone asked this on GameFAQs, jokingly, like, now, and I've actually been thinking over this for quite some time, and then I ended up going all SRS BSNS on him, so... discussion. In SRS BSNS. So, what is the purpose of life? The way I see it, other than the possibly scientific reasoning of passing genetic information down from parent to child, I see one, possibly two, main purposes of life. The first, that I find most controversial, is, of course, the worship of your God, should you have one. The second, universally important purpose, is simple. The discovery and transcending of knowledge, from generation to generation. The goal of life is to advance, and so, the children must surpass the adults. Each individual will slowly be forgotten, and so, the only reason that one could make a difference, beyond their own mortality, is through the discovery, or rediscovery, of facts that are relevant to the next generation. But, that is simply my own opinion. What does the Temple believe? |

These sorts of things are almost always distorted due to the framing of the question or style of argument. =P In a sense, one could say the purpose of life is to be happy. |

Blah blah blah Schopenhauer blah Nietzsche existentialism blah blah. If you're religious, I imagine your meaning of life comes from the words of prophets and holy texts. If you are not, you make up your own and argue with the ideologies of long-dead philosophers. |

The logical result of requiring proof for anything is nihilism. If you go through scientifically, the biological need to pass on genetics is not a purpose any more than a rock has a purpose of falling when gravity takes hold. It just does; it isn't 'mean' to do anything. That said, that is a boring and depressing school of thought, with no more proof towards it than assuming something put us here. It also encourages a lack of self-improvement. My point of view revolves around this: There is something that either put us here, or manipulated situations so that we came about. He is watching us like an ant farm. Or a sitcom. You are, more than likely, a side character. Or an extra. |

The incredibly geeky Platonic/Socratic/Diotimean sense, where "reproduction" is of the "knowledge" rather than genes-not that it's what he meant, probably. |

If our meaning is to provide for other life forms, what makes trees different from us in that aspect? And are you referring to Plato's Symposium and his platonic love? |

In the aspect of meaning? None. There are other ways to differentiate us from trees aside from just teleology. But then again, I'm just defining meaning in terms of universal functionality. So in that respect, maybe not exactly "providing", more like "supplying". So yeah, I might be off on how I'm using "meaning", but no one actually provided a scope for this "meaning" thing before starting to ask for what it could be. Also, Symposium, in his reference to Diotima, though I was just providing an "alternative" to the take on "reproduction". |
