Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

Plastic is recyclable, yes, but it doesn't biodegrade like most other materials. Plus, the biodegradable bags that were introduced several years ago can be said to be even more troublesome as they're not compatible with conventional recycling systems and can pretty much render entire batches of other recyclable plastic useless. It takes over a year for most to breakdown, so who knows where they will be in that time if they're littered. And well, there's a lot of contamination involved in the process with either type of bag. They say that somewhere in the middle of the ocean, there's a huge pile of floating plastic that is as big as the state of Texas.

I don't like paper, either, so that's why I opt for the reusable bag. And yes, Boyd, people do use them.
Oh yeah. I forgot. I like pissing off hippies too.

Well, the Bay Area -WAS- the birthplace of hippies. =P We're full of eco-warriors.
No, the Bay Area was a cheap cop out of Bar Harbor. We're the real origin.

I chose Paper because I consider my recycleable bag as part of Paper. I would have chosen Neither if I had read Val's post.

I also thought it could refer to cups. I'd rather Corn cups than either, though.

You want the best Eco-Warriors? You come to Bar Harbor. We train them: every year we turn out 100 more or so of the best eco-warriors the likes of which have never been seen to the greater world.

We have the masses, Gywdd. xP The dynamics of a metropolis, or rather, the entire Northern California coast - and much more. >___> 'course, I wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the case or if it was/is more authentic in Bar Harbor because its so small and concentrated there, and because of College of the Atlantic. I trust you.

Except... from I've read almost everywhere, it seems as if the Bay Area was the origin, or at least the epicenter, of the movement and still holds to many of its influences in the 21st century. For instance, the concept of flower power and a lot of student activism of the same mold originated in the city of Berkeley, and the original beatnik culture was centered in San Francisco's North Beach before the 60s even began. And, of course, the Summer of Love and a lot of other stuff, was centered here, too. Fastforward, and look to the green movement. SF was the first city in the nation to ban plastic bags, and a lot of our other cities like Oakland and Palto Alto quickly followed. All of the protected parkland in this region amounts to a size even greater than that of Yosemite National Park.

My school was founded on the beginning of it.

I'll grant you have the masses of it. And masses is probably more important.

But it's important to live the spirit as well as just the movement.

It exists in different forms in some places, perhaps, but I say the spirit is still alive.

Also, College of the Atlantic reminds of Evergreen State College in Washington and the University of California, Santa Cruz. All three were influenced by/founded in the sixties as alternative schools and are remarkably green.

Usually reusable bags, but whatever it is we find a way to reuse it. Plastic bags get used as garbage bags. Paper ones get brought back to the store to be used again until they are too crumpled to be used.

This. Except, we usually use paper bags to place other paper/cardboard products out at the curb for the recycling guys to pick up.

Plastic bags have one thing going for them that reusable bags and paper bags don't: You can use 'em to pick up after Fido.
