So, I finally started watching this. I just finished S2, lemme see if I can recall most of my thoughts on S1, since that was a month or two ago.

S1 stuff

S2 stuff

Rants done for now. I hear from everyone ever that S3 and S4 are significantly better, and I've trusted their judgments on that. The worst is behind me.

In defense of season 1's ending, it was written while under the impression that Nickelodeon was only giving them a single 12-episode season. Then it was given a second season, and then an extension to four seasons. Even then, they ended up cutting an episode's worth of money from their fourth season budget after doing that sudden 180 from"only on TV" to "online only."

Boo, Nickelodeon.

Yeah, Nickelodeon's mismanagement of LoK really hurt it. The writers kinda made the most of what they were given in each instance, but if they had the stability of knowing they'd have 4 12-epsiode seasons to begin with, this series absolutely would've been much better.

Out of curiosity, since I'm afraid to wiki anything related to Korra, was there a change in writers during S2 or something else that offers some kind of explanation for it?

Like, the end of S1 is more understandable if it was designed as a standalone, and I can understand it more because of those limitations. There has to be something for S2. Somewhere. Something.

A quick wiki glance tells me I was right about the changes in episode count. It went from 1, to 2, to 4. Season 1 was written entirely by Brian and Mike, and had the same two directors throghout as well. But, from season 2 onwards, it looks like the writing responsibilities moved to two other writers, who alternated between episodes. Similarly, the two directors who co-directed each episode of the first season stop showing up in directing credits, and are replaced by two directors who take turns like the writers. I dunno if any of that really matters, considering they did the same thing for 3 and 4, and they turned out pretty well.

To me, the biggest shortcoming of Season 2 was that they felt the need to retread Korra's character development (and also make her kind of a bitch to Mako).

Giraffes are adorable.

I say the blame goes both ways. How I hate love triangles, or squares in this case.

Nah it's more like a hexagon with Opal and Eska.

I actually haven't minded the triangle as much as I thought I would have (some of the dumbass writing moments in the relationships aside). It's (generally) avoided the annoying melodrama that plagues them, and presents it more straight as "wtf do I do when I really like two girls".

Granted, I also know the final pairing that emerges from it, which is hilarious and amazing, sooooo...

Meanwhile, the Bolin/Eska stuff really annoyed me, mostly because I didn't like Eska or Desna and found their development pretty dumb. I got really annoyed at the start of the climax with their relationship change, but found the final stage in S2 (getting caught up in the moment) a legitimately awesome idea that I wish they had explored more.

But then we wouldn't have been able to use Bolin as haha-buttmonkey for the entire season (in opposition to Mako's plot-buttmonkey).

You know how people say "show, don't tell" is the best for writing. I think this show needed a bit more "tell" when it comes to explaining things that are going on.

I'm not discounting the skill of energybending. I'm more skeptical of the applications here, and how it winds up being used to put Korra on the same level as an effective god. It also doesn't help that it takes no real work from her - the development leading up to it is Tenzin overcoming his own seasonal issues, then just kind of...transferring that development at Korra, instead of having her find it through her own path (which would inherently be different).

Wheey! I've became a human being!! I am very handsam!

Just like The Last Airbender, we've now got Korra comics coming down the pipe, just announced at Comic-Con. All we know yet is that Michael is writing them, and that at least three volumes are planned, which will focus on Korra and Asami, and the aftermath of the finale.

Speaking of comics, I literally haven't been able to get my hands on the TLA comics at all, until now. I just finished reading The Search.

Eh, at first I was excited to read this, but now I think that was ultimately a waste of time.

The next one that's not out yet, Smoke and Shadow, is about Fire Nation stuff again so some of this may be revisited.

I liked the Korra series more than the Aang series. Somehow I liked the characters more, I even rewatched the whole series this summer! Also, the ending was something I didn't expect..AT ALL! I don't want to spoil anything to someone that is still watching, but did anyone see this coming? Apparently there where some hints throughout the show but I didn't see them....actually when I ended the last episode the first time, I still didn't see it as something romantical but just a good friendship!!...
