How does that have anything to do with waterbending at all?

He was basically going to corrupt/ destroy a spirit, which he's clearly got a knack for.

In the first series, even the "advanced" bending techniques were clearly extensions of what basic bending is: bloodbending, lightning, metalbending, flying around with rocket propulsion, etc. This spirit stuff is a lot harder to swallow and a lot less intuitive to the viewer so when it happens out of nowhere without being explained or even suggested as a possibility, it seems like writers wrote themselves into a corner and needed to make shit up on the fly.

He's just using water to channel his spirit energy. Like how Iroh and Aang entered the spirit world-they weren't bending when they did it. Korra uses Water too because that's the only way she knows how to so it, as we have yet to see another bender with a strong spiritual connection interact with spirits [Iroh could do it though I bet]. That or it's just something that Vaatu gave him.

Two predictions before go time: -Vaatu has been playing Unalaq all along and has no intention of merging with him; he's at full power so why would he need to? -Through some series of events, everyone present will be trapped in the Spirit World, where they will be for a portion of Book Three.

So watch out, plenty of spoilers are probably out there now. But also this means the premiere can't be that far away, if they're that far along in production that that many episodes are completed and dubbed in other languages already.
