It's too bad we haven't seen it work out in her favor even once yet. When she eventually goes Avatar state it's gonna be a beautiful trainwreck. It would provide for good conflict later on in the show.

One of the big things is how things have DEVELOPED. Korra is really interested in "Modern" styles of bending, and most of the fighters we see aren't traditional. Notice, Airbending still gets that same traditional treatment, because Korra's learning it from a traditional master, but while each element initially spawned from a different martial arts style, "Modern" bending is more like modern fighting, drawing from a hodge-podge of places. Notice how Earthbenders are much lighter on their feet, only bracing themselves the moment they bend so they can be more offensive instead of the slow defensive styles shown in the first season. I think the shifts in fighting style have been wholly intentional, at least so far.

I thought that it might be but it's not Mako who is threatened but opponents from the other pro-bending teams.
