I've essentially made it a promise not to spoil a Ghibli movie that I know is going to be released in theaters, even if it means waiting a year or two after its initial release. Anyway, I liked it. It's not as good as other Ghibli films, but it has its own charm and the director, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, certainly shows a lot of potential and I'm looking forward to his future creations. The only major complaints I had were the name changes and the emotional "flatness" of some of the voice actors. I tend to be very tolerant of dubs even if they're not the greatest, but there were many lines that I feel could have had much more of an impact if they packed a bit more emotion.

I loved the original books as a child, and the film adaptation was the first film I ever saw [and it was a cool film]. The studio Ghibli version...didn't do it for me.

Final thoughts; Spoiler: click to toggle Cried my eyes out. Retcons seem to be the new Dead Parents but this one was horribly sad. I didn't quite grasp it until I saw Himari's (unpainted!) house and the note Shouma and Kanba had left for her. That just did it for me. ; A ; I think more than ever this episode proves not everyone will click with this show. Anime is rarely straightforward but Penguindrum turns this up to 11 and I can see why some people view it as meaningless. Certainly, I still kinda question why penguins (though they seem to reflect their owners inner feelings, such as Shouma being a big eater because he nearly starved to death, and Kanba's has the band aid Himari gave him) and I'm still trying to get my head around what the Penguindrum really was. (Though Mawaru = Spinning + Love = Nice trolling with your washing machine, Mr Creator.) But it's more arriving at your own conclusion rather than being spoon-fed the answer, and I don't think it's a bad thing to do that. I've seen some nice analysis of Shouma in the box and it explains why the Princess never used him to give Himari another life, because he'd already given his Penguindrum to Himari. Like I said before, you just have to reflect! I think I still need time to assess just how much I liked this anime. That said, the finale was well written (You gotta be shittin' me, you say? ) and "We love you! From your brothers." are words that are going to stick with me for a long time. I really wish it could have turned out well for all three of the siblings, but of course it just couldn't be that way. =(

True Name: simplechild	So, I think Ano Natsu de Matteru is going to be my favorite out of the entire Winter anime season. I mean, it's not doing anything new with its setup or even the relationships but its execution and pacing is just frickin amazing so far. Wait, did I say favorite? I think that's still reserved for Nichibros. Nisemonogatari has become a personal obligation rather than a must-see recently.
