2011 as a whole was too good. They have to remedy that by having 2012 suck. |

Okay I know some people that watch Fate/Zero will wait for UTW's release later but whatever. My opinion of episode 10 has gone from confused indifference to hatred. Yes, let's use all this animation money and screentime for loli Rin and get lazy with the animation and faces for the first half of episode 11 and cut out pretty much all of Archer's part of the king's banquet. I mean, that wasn't important at all and nobody wanted to see that, right? ...Although given that last week's preview had some lines from Kirei and Tokiomi too, as well as an absent Archer line maybe that stuff will be in the BD release. Does not excuse wasting time with Rin/the animation part. ...However, the main attraction of the episode, Rider's Noble Phantasm, well, I have no words fitting of it. Watch it yourself. |

I kind of took Rin's adventure as a breather episode personally from all the conflict that was going on. After the brutalness and sadness of the last few episodes, it was refreshing to have one that turned out so well and focused on Rin's perspective of things as a child, as well as stuff like her relationship with her father and friends. Iunno, maybe this all got explained in Fate/Stay Night and it didn't need retelling again, but I liked that they weren't afraid to include it in a show where the heart of it is 'Let's you and him fight.' Constant battles and sadness, even if done very well, can sometimes leave us to desire something else for freshness. That's just me though and it's not like I've read the novel. I can't deny hearing Archer being left out of the King's Banquet is a baffling decision. I guess I'll reserve judgement until I see it for myself. |

The problem with Rin's Adventure was that it hyperextended that to cover most of the episode and crammed the most important part, Kariya and Aoi, into the last minute or so. Even if that part covered everything in the novel, if anything within episode 10 needed more time, it was that. The parts at the beginning with Tokiomi were good though, and necessary since some people don't buy that Rin (and Aoi) love Tokiomi without actually seeing it. Given how he's been hiding in his house so far and barely appearing except to order Kirei or Archer, he really needed that development. But in the novel Rin didn't save her friends, she didn't confront Rynnosuke, all she did was look around for a bit, find nothing, then get attacked by the tentacle monster and saved by Kariya. In the novel that part was supposed to be "oops, Rin messed up" not "Rin is a hero, hooray"; the anime completely changed the message with that part, which at the end of the day is a small thing, as it's not like that part is ever relevant or brought up ever again. But Rin's Adventure had pretty much spotless animation and developed the character of...Rin, who only shows up two more times in Zero, and they're both brief. Pouring resources (time, money) into that at the expense of the king's banquet is unacceptable. When Urobuchi set out to write Zero, he was specifically told to include two things: 1. Kiritsugu's backstory 2. Arturia getting bullied by Gilgamesh and Alexander the Great ...Except due to the cuts, all Archer did here was talk about how the Grail is his because he owns everything. Which was in the novel, mind you. Except not only is that mindset of Archer extremely obvious, in case it wasn't he already said as much to Tokiomi in episode 3, so while this needed to be there, it also means Archer did basically nothing new this episode. They didn't even make him laugh while Saber was explaining herself like he was supposed to. His entire philosophy on what it means to be a king was cut. Which was the entire reason why the three of them were together: to discuss kingship. Not only that, that speech explains a lot of his character since after all he identifies himself first and foremost as the "King of Heroes". So basically, the episode where the point was to compare and contrast three different types of kingship only explored two. This is the part of the story where Archer starts to see Rider as something more than a mere "mongrel" and starts to begin his lust for Saber. In the novel the latter was shown by having him stare at Saber basically the entire time, and the episode didn't even give us that by seemingly trying to avoid showing faces prior to Ionian Hetaroi, all it did was have him mention one line about "his love," which...comes out of nowhere, given the cuts. Archer's thoughts on Rider were completely absent from this episode, which was also important as Gilgamesh, the arrogant jerk that takes nobody seriously and shows no respect for anything he doesn't approve of, thinks he might have found a worthy opponent. Given which character's lack of time I'm complaining about, this might seem like bias, but it's not. One of the things that people who have read F/SN say is good about Zero is that it characterizes Saber and Gilgamesh better, especially the latter given that the former is, you know, the main heroine and already had lots of screen time. This episode had so much content that it had to skip the opening, so I understand time was tight. Considering what Ionian Hetaroi is, I also understand saving the animation budget for that part of the episode. But both of those statements fall flat when the last episode had a bunch of time and resources put into it. So the logic here is that we have to buy the $400 Blu Ray set just to see the characterization of a major character in probably spotty animation while we get a well animated minor character's adventure for free? No, just no. Hell (and here's where the bit of bias comes in) Fate/Zero is the entire reason why I actually like Gilgamesh and why he's my favorite character. This isn't the only time where we get to see some of his character in Zero, but it was a big part of it. Now all of that said Ionian Hetaroi was really [radio edit]ing amazing and behind all this hate I am fanboying that SO. GODDAMN. HARD. |

Oh wait, Fado's Moose. Noted. KING OF CONQUERORS DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH HEROES? Behold, as kings face off; one surrounded by people, heroes which he lead and treasured, the other surrounded by treasures, the things he collected from his opponents. And yet the first discards another as not his equal, and the latter seeks to claim her. |

Those were some good pictures, but did you like the plot or just the eye candy? ![]() Forgive me if I'm wrong but are you saying it's strange that he considers Archer his equal and not Saber? It's only natural for Rider to think Saber's not his equal yet maintain that Archer is. Rider's whole problem with Saber is that she didn't live for herself at all, she ultimately alienated her people enough to cause a civil war, and she, by her own admission, was alone. Archer, on the other hand, did indeed live for himself, he inspired his people enough that they worshiped him long after his death, and while we know little about how his rule went after the Epic, the 1st Uruk Dynasty continued after his death and the walls that he built to protect his city stood for hundreds of years. And, of course, even if it was only briefly, he wasn't alone, he had Enkidu. |

Not at all, I just find it amusing that the one whose 'thing' is physical possessions is taking interest in a person who was rejected by the one whose 'thing' is people. |
