okay later Maison Ikkoku gets really good, I had forgotten. The art, the story, the tone, the characters start realizing what asses they are... very good. |

Perhaps predictably, I watched Citrus. I think about 90% of this show's content could've been safely cut out. For some reason, there were a lot of [radio edit]ing annoying anime girls. I'm normally indifferent about Japanese VAs, but the protagonist's was actually really good. Her private cringe moments were nice. Clearly the show's towering achievement. |

Seems Fate Apocrypha has finally been released on blu ray in its entirety. Looking forward to return to a Fate anime. |

Oh, no it's been released in several boxes, as is usual with anime blu-rays. But I usually wait until the whole series is out because waiting between releases of the individual blu-ray boxes takes time and they contain like, what, 3-4 episodes at max? So I saw some time ago that the first box was released and then I haven't been checking until now, and seems the first subs for the complete box came out just a few days ago so timed it perfectly. |

Mildly curious about this one: This one also looks nice. I like some of the character designs and setpieces. Promo music is on point, too. Will be starting the recommendations list with Shin Sekai Yori. |

[intensifies] On my end, definitely enjoying the LoGH reboot Digimon tri concluded and was pretty poorly executed, despite a few nice moments waaaay too much 'digivolution' filler villain was absolutely awful and the script was pretty wonky should've done a bit more storyboarding but hey, I appreciate the nostalgia really miss the bad puns of the dub |

Damn, I'm sold on this. So, 6 episodes in on Fate Apocrypha...first thoughts on top of my head...it's certainly over the top compared to Zero and UBW. The fights, the character designs, even the sound effects are all top bass distorted stuff. Hell, I like it, I got a weak spot for over the top fights. There's a lot of gender confusion for some reason? Alfonso is apparently male but isn't even androgynous in his design, like he's just a straight up female character. I don't know what's up with Mordred being female...yet obviously not liking being called female and in the flashback she? called herself the son of Arthur. A lot of back and forth there. Mordred brings me to Arthur, which was shown in her Zero/UBW design...yet being called him? We'll see if this is actually some important plot point or just a weird gender symbolism thing. Also, of course Jack the Ripper is a tiny girl. Why wouldn't he be. And I lost it at the cripple girl coming in with the freaking Doctor Octopus arms. As I said, over the top. I hope Saber of Black comes back somehow. He was a cool character and I would like to see more of him. If the intro part of episode 1 is anything to go by, he will. But I've seen openings like that which just introduced characters and themes but in non-canon settings that never actually happens. |

Did you not watch anything Fate/Stay Night? Arthur is called a "him" because she was hiding her gender because she thought her people wouldn't accept a woman as king. Nowadays Fate does gender benders with zero thought and originality but King Arthur being a girl was a twist in the original F/SN to people in universe too, and indeed Kiritsugu in Zero. Only Mordred, Lancelot, Guinevere (for obvious, unavoidable reasons), and some of the other Knights of the Round Table knew she was a girl. Everyone else thought she was a boy because Excalibur halts aging so her body was forever 15 and not fully through puberty so she could pass as a teenage boy. As for Mordred he WAS originally canonically a boy but they didn't want another character like Astolfo for the reasons you mentioned so she's just a girl now. She's basically an outright clone of her "father" anyway so the gender being the same is whatever. She just hates being called a girl because it makes her feel like she's being talked down to or something. She identifies as a girl, just don't call her one. It's probably just an in joke related to the character originally being male anyways. |

No I started with Fate Zero, I even think I asked here and was told that Night was a mess of several of the routes in the visual novels and that the writing and animation in Night wasn't as good compared to the others. So besides Zero and UBW I haven't watched any Fate related animes and I haven't read any of the visual novels. But thank you, that would explain it. It's somewhat what I guessed but the first six episodes of Apocrypha felt confusing in regards to that. |

Well, it's really on the writers/Nasu for not making stuff like that clear, plus just with how swollen the Fate franchise is - there's not as much purely standalone stuff, though I think the things you hit on in Fate/Apocrypha are probably just eyerolly if you don't know the context, and not crucial to understanding the story. Astolfo dressing like that is totally fine with me, I think the different takes on 'gender' as such is one of the best things about F/A the over the top is definitely another great part w |

I think at this point with the franchise there's just a lot of stuff that's expected to be common knowledge by now Remember that fate/stay night the VN never actually came out in English but everyone assumes people know some basic things about it |

Well, yes, but I'm talking from a writing perspective. I don't think the writers are factoring in F/SN not having an English release into their decisions (but hey, they might be). There is a lot that they take as common knowledge, but insofar as other introductions, they did a better job of introducing the Grail war in ep 1 than F/Z did w |

Oh they absolutely do not write things with filthy gajins in mind, which is my point The stuff KitN didn't get is common knowledge to the Japanese by now so F/A didn't bother to explain it Especially with how much F/A uses cameos and stuff, with like Tristian and Artemis using their designs from GO, etc |

I've been watching The Piano Forest this season, since I'm a classical music bore. The music itself actually matches the story. The changes in playing style are subtle, but audible, and are more accurately compared to other styles. Your Lie in April tends to "improve" someone's playing simply by continuing where the OST piece left off, so I like the extra effort put into hiring different pianists for the same music pieces. The story itself is pretty good, and so are the visuals. But the animation is subpar. Extremely subpar. Like, worse than Nodame Cantabile levels of subpar. |
