Temple of Kraden News: Welcome to the Temple of Kraden! ------ All worshipers may enter the Most Holy Place in single file, reflecting on the bountiful blessing Kraden hath provided unto him or herself since their last visit. Head coverings are not necessary, as true penitence and humility are found within. The Priests and Priestesses of Kraden endeavor to remind all that fresh orange juice is heavily preferred; only whores use frozen.
Greetings, heathen. Perhaps some fortuitous blessing of Kraden's grace hath led you to our humble Temple, or perhaps you are simply curious about this strange and wonderful cult. Should you be willing - and dare to hope - to achieve enlightenment, the door opens before you. Lo! Leave your old life behind! For once you step through, you become something more than just yourself.

You become a Kradenette.

Are you willing to make the rapturous plunge? Do you have what it takes?

esoteric in which sense

Looking for something with the flavor of, say, Mushishi. You can interpret that however you wish -- it checks off most of the boxes in what I'm looking for.

Or, something with an interesting art or animation direction would also be nice. Bakemonogatari's a good example. Not really looking for shonen or anything with a high emphasis on action.

Or, something artsy. I would also be fine with pretentious.

Would prefer to steer clear of comedy, unless it's absurdist or dark. Bake's another good example.

Madoka Magica: Rebellion.

You could try Tatami Galaxy, it might jive with you atm

Acknowledged. Will give Tatami a shot. Your anime recs have not yet been wrong.

Rebellion needs to be a community thing at this point.

As far as recent anime go, there isn't a lot I watched that meet this criteria, other than Shinsekai Yori. Hmm.

These come to mind:

Mawaru Penguindrum
Paranoia Agent
Mayoiga (tenative, it's up to you how you interpret it)
Ghost Hound
ef: a tale of memories
Serial Experiments Lain
Kaiba
18if, even if it's super mediocre as a whole.

Asphodel would probably enjoy Shinsekai Yori and Serial Experiments Lain, yeah, if he hasn't seen them already. I haven't seen any of the authors except for Penguindrum, so I can't vouch for those
He probably would not like Penguindrum <_<

I watched Serial Experiments Lain for the first time a while back. I honestly still don't know what I watched or what to make of it. And I certainly can't explain why I still ended up liking it. But SEL fits all the categories of artsy and confusing.

I would also recommend Ergo Proxy. It's slow, artsy, mysterious and confusing.

Great openings too.

Texhnolyze is another slow artsy anime.

I've heard that Paranoia Agent is in the same bookshelf but haven't watched it myself yet.

I just finished watching Akame ga Kill yesterday. It was... okay, I guess. Not bad, but not great.
One thing I thought it did well was how much screen time it gave the antagonists to see what was going on on their side of the story. That's always nice.

I started Princess Tutu today. Only 2 episodes in. What a bizarre show.

OPM is so hype right now. It's definitely building up a lot better and building Garou's character more than ONE's first try.

Garou is a beast.

And we're finally getting closer to the climax battle. Can't for Black Sperm greatness.

It's what I love with the elite of the MA. You got all these complex, bad-ass monsters throughout the story, and then you get to the strongest monsters and they're a literal walking humanoid sperm, a homeless dude, a silly blob and so on.

So this is apparently a thing that's actually happening

I'm willing to keep it alive against its own will, until I get to see Yamamotos bankai animated. Then it can die. I don't even need the rest of the final arc, just Yamamotos fire skeleton bankai. The whole budget can go towards it.

inb4 they spend the whole budget on that and then it looks like something out of The Muppets.

@simple, Satty, & KitN: thanks for the recommendations. Will add these to my list!

If only all anime was as revolutionary and mind-shattering as Kannazuki no Miko.

But that's sakuga, KitN.

That's the opposite of "no budget."

I know this is pretty far outside of anything any of you are probably interested in but I'm going to shout my thoughts into the void too:

Rereading Maison Ikkoku and 1. it's fascinating stepping back into 80s Japan 2. If you're into feeling uncomfortable with rapey parts that haven't aged well even by anime/manga standards, this is the manga for you (even though Mitaka's comments are meant to make him look bad, they don't make him look BAD ENOUGH. Godai's kinda do but for some reason he's still the Good Pick). 3. Kyoko may be a leader-onner but she deserves so much better than the options she got. Not sure why she spent years waffling between two trash bags, IRL the whole thing would have ended when a third normal man entered the love triangle and she started dating him.

As long as you read the prerequisite 75 chapters of One Punch Man, your opinions on other stuff are welcome.
