- Virgin Soul is still great - Fate/Apocrypha actually seems like it might be decent, obligatory infodump first episode out of the way - Symphogear already looks to be angling better than GX
I'm also watching Tales of Zestiria the X, which has been surprisingly good so far. The animation has been excellent, but as of ep 4 the dreaded "Ufotable saving budget" reared its head, in terms of just CGI'ing an entire townscape. >_> I'm also watching it in dub since that's what I'm familiar with from the game, and it's generally been quite excellent. The OP is excellent too.

So I'll be rewatching/watching things on my backlog. Kurenai was really good, and Soredemo Machi wa Mawatte Iru holds up.

Bakemonogatari 10 Production values/10 Feels like I've seen this opening sequence in Madoka, proably because Shaft. Things look very different from what I remember. The vampire lady looks like someone who I'll think is cool. (I was watching the first episode by mistake.) Bakemonogatari 10 Oshino is my soul whisperer. The scene of him and Arararagi discussing the Snake Curse is shot with my tastes in mind.
OPs feel so out of place in this show. Although to be fair I don't remember the previous ones.
More and more, Araragi feels like a Murakami protagonist. That might just be because of his personality in the show's more subdued moments, though.
I might not be catching on to a lot of the wordplay on the first viewing, but the visual language is 100% good. I think that's what draws me to this (in annual intervals, apparently).
Those flashlight cones occasionally overlapping as they walk to the shrine is a nice and striking touch.
I'm sure this is unrelated but I'm reminded that I should read me some Vladimir Nabokov.
Araragi going hands-on with the invisible Snake Constrictor is some impressive directing. I should probably watch this scene a few more times. Always cool to see action scenes in which there's no visible antagonist on which to center the focus.
Feels like Araragi is made for bittersweet endings like this.

virgin soul 15 El being convinced that he's the sole saviour of the world cannot end well.
I actually still like Clarice (not sure how you spell that) as an antagonist quite a bit, since the tenderness he shows to Nina, willingness to sacrifice himself, and infinite patience he shows with his human subjects really serve to... humanize B) him, and it makes his complete disregard for demon and angel life. Animals would probably get more respect. And I think it's the positive traits that make the genocidal maniac ones even more horrifying, because as Jeanne and Nina were discussing, it's those contradictions that make it both interesting and believable. Especially with his use of slave labour and the protests against his reign, as well as development of superweapons, that makes it easy to see the parallel between his character and certain other political figures.
@Asphodel "i'm sure this is unrelated" wwwwwwww Glad you're enjoying it, though!

virgin soul I like how the story is still holding its cards as to what he's motivated by, since I doubt that the total annihilation of gods and demons is his main drive. All we have for evidence is his tendency to sneak out of the castle and blend in with the commoners, as well as a single instance of him visiting a grave. My impression is that he's motivated by revenge, and now it's just how that desire seemed to justify attaining kingdom, enslaving the demons, and crippling the gods. I might be a tad disappointed if the motivation isn't quite as I imagine it to be (I'm assuming something related to that epic cataclysm ten years ago and then some), but either way I respect the story showing restraint.

Guys. Guys, listen. The two latest DBS ep got me thinking and I couldn't stop thinking about it.
DORAGON BORU SUPA So...what if they're going with a twist ending to the tournament? Am I the only one feeling the Angels are...a little too shady at times? Look at these fucking shots of these smug sons of bitches And Whis and Vados have been joking about their universes being erased while they will be kept alive. While this can be seen as a comedic relationship with their Gods of Destructions...what if all the Angels got something bigger planned behind the scenes...? All orchestrated by daddy Great Priest....? If there's some logic behind this twist, what could their plan be? Overthrowing Zen-Oh? How? Why? Is there maybe some yet unknown mechanic of power/heirarchy connected to the state of the multiverse and this is all according to plan? Maybe they want to create a "perfect" universe with only the strongest individuals in it and overthrow Zen-Oh since they're a couple of immature, unpredictable children? That Kai-guy from Universe 1 talked about Universe 9 being erased as a "necessary sacrifice" to "balance the levels of all universes". Maybe that has something to do with it? I mean the only reason we've had for erasing them at all is because Zen-Ohs are children and felt this was a fun way to punish the losers. This is all a game to them and the fighters are all toys. So for a Kai to speak about it in more mature terms like that, like it was actually something that had to happen, or maybe even... supposed to happen? Hmmm, really makes you think.

virgin soul Yeah, I was definitely thinking revenge as well, judging by that grave. We also know he was the child of a concubine, I believe...? Revenge, and that tied up with a desire to protect the rest of humanity.
I definitely hoping for that "and then some" point, since I want his motivation to be more than I imagine it to be. Basically I want to be surprised.
I'm curious if it's going to be related to ancient lore and the whole "harnessing eldritch abomination" kind of things, and if all that ties into the alternate dimension Bahamut poofed into at the end of Genesis. :tinfoil:

Bakemonogatari 11 Lechraragi-kun.
I've noticed how we come to learn about certain characters' supernatural problems only after we've been acquainted with them for a bit. Like Hanekawa's meddlesome cat problem. It's treated like an afterthought, an "oh yeah, I forgot to mention that she has this glaring issue" kind of thing. I like that. Very magic-realism, if not 'pataphysical.

Finished the third Kizumonogatari movie last night. Easily the best of the three imo, but all three were pretty great.
Dat Hanekawa scene though. My brother and I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

I've seen screenshots and it seems pretty wild
I'm still not really watching anything this season, but I've seen a few episodes of 18if and it's the about as Gonzo as you can think Gonzo is capable of. Gankutsuou is still the title holder for peak Gonzo but this so far is a good attempt.

So far it's been pretty good. Nowhere near as bad as the trainwreck that was Izetta. Plenty of time to see if it stays on course or goes downhill.
Aside from Princess Principal, I'm only watching Symphogear AXZ.

Symphogear AXZ is great, it's like the over the top silliness of the first ep of GX and kept with it for the story arc.
ep 3 spoilers The antagonists this time around seem pretty cool and the AU setting is interesting even if it's random af that it's brought up 4 seasons in. I actually completely forgot about Dansleif until it was brought up in this season, and ofc it's just brought up to show that it's not strong enough anymore so they need to find a power that's stronger. Nothing will top the power of Chris fighting while riding on a giant missile though.
