I can barely think of any redheaded tsunderes in general.
Do you even Rie Kugimiya.
I was gonna mention Shana, but...

but it's relevant to the discussion. It sexualizes 14 year old girls, has a boring girl and tsundere that want to get in the MC's pants for little reason(Well Asuka also wants to do the same to that guy that's like, almost twice her age? but w/e, still somewhat harem).

Kotori from Date a Live is another red-haired tsundere, although her tsundere qualities are less apparent compared to the girls already mentioned. It's more just that she's made her older brother the bitch of their relationship, truly a figure all younger siblings should look up to.

So guy directs anime where everything is supposed to symbolize parts of his mind and personality during his depression.

It gets analyzed as a harem anime with boring tsundere girls.

He must be proud.

Anno is never proud, just butthurt.

Maybe things would've turned out better if he made another Gunbuster instead of a bad show like Evangelion.

To be fair I would probably be butthurt too if I put all this surreal symbolism into my work and all I get is otakus discussing if Rei or Asuka is the better kawaii waifu.

muh cross-shaped explosions and assorted deep symbolism. Didn't Anno himself say that he added a lot of symbolism because it "looks cool" anyways?

Regardless of the intention he had in making the series, it did popularize both those archetypes enough that they went on to be pretty much mandatory for "generic harem shows"

Yes? It does contain symbolism...? Among those are religous...? I don't see the actual problem you're trying to describe here sorry.

I don't know about that. I'm sure he wanted it to look cool. What I do know is that he was depressed and he did get inspiration from it and I felt and understood that from my experience when I watched it.

I'm sure you all got good reasons for why it's bad beyond the memes and 4chan talk and I would love to hear it, as someone who enjoyed it. You guys have watched and knows much more about anime than I do so you have more to compare to and analyze with and probably knows more about the actual people behind it all.

Harems are ridiculous but if you're going to call any case where more than one person has feelings for the same target a harem, uuuuuuuuuh

I was talking about the archetypes used in Evangelion, which are extremely popular in harem(mostly because of Eva). I stated it was somewhat harem anyways, not full out 6 chicks 1 dick harem battle royale extravaganza. But if you need more harem, Shinji also gets to live with an attractive adult woman as well as 2 girls his age, what a lucky kid.

Despite my shitposting, I don't dislike Evangelion, infact I think it has some good qualities to it and probably like it more than a lot of people here. I did find the series underwhelming though, especially since literally everyone and their dog hyped it up for me. At times I found the symbolism used interesting but Anno had a way of overindulging in it, especially with the whole cross-shaped explosions and such. I prefer the more subtle approach used in Rahxephon to Evangelion. Some of the imagery used in the end of Evangelion is great though, even if it could be heavy-handed with the Christian symbolism.

I found the sexualization of 14 year old girls very weird when I watched it... but I'm pretty much conditioned to having that stuff not phase me now from other anime(I know >_>). I think with the style of the show Evangelion is meant to be the fanservice is unnecessary but the themes of sexuality are handled maturely and the focus on the psychological side of it is good, even underrated. I'm more interested in series that take influence from Carl Jung but Eva's whole Freudian influence is decent even if it isn't amazing.

One of my biggest problems with Eva is the pacing and episodic narrative it has for the majority of the show. Every episode you know an Angel is going to pop up, wreck some shit and be defeated by the Eva units, the fights themselves can be sweet but a lot of these episodes don't contribute much to the story or characters as it's the same conflict of human vs Angel of the week. Compare this episodic style to say, Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell, which present a unique conflict with each episode, exploring how each character reacts to the situation and giving backstory to them.

Shinji as a character barely develops throughout the story even though you're constantly teased that he's going to change. I understand this was kinda the point with his character to state that someone won't "man up" in a situation like that, but it doesn't really make for a compelling main character across 26 episodes. I think the 6 episode length of Gunbuster would've been more suited to that, funnily enough, Gunbuster is the one that has the main character "man up" over the course of the series.

I wasn't into mecha(or anime) when I watched Evangelion and my friends decided the last 2 episodes(yes, those episodes) would be a good introduction to the series so I went into it with very different expectations, which probably hindered my enjoyment of the series overall.

TL;DR Eva is a decent show and there's plenty of worse anime out there, but I don't think it's the masterpiece a lot of people hold it up to be.

The monster of the week episodes were the best part about Eva though.

Finished Valvrave, didn't hate it. More irritated with the ending, like most people seem to be.

I'm actually sidetracking and watching Initial D First Stage right now. Pretty damn awesome for an anime about racing.

Also obligatory HOLY [RADIO EDIT] THAT 86.

About Eva...

tl;dr basically what Silvy said

The show constantly promises interesting development, primarily through the plot and the nature of Angels, and then never actually delivers on them. The pacing of the plot itself did little to balance out the sheer ridiculousness of the final two episodes/End of Evangelion, which have so much happening that really doesn't seem to mesh with the rest of the show. The minor characters were all far more interesting than Shinji/Asuka/Rei, yet got fractions of the screentime. A main character who doesn't develop at all throughout 26 episodes is a [radio edit]ing travesty (particularly when he almost did at one point, then just...didn't). Asuka is [radio edit]ing annoying as piss as a character, and her only redeeming feature was her mental breakdown and falling sync rate later in the show. Rei was the most boring character on the show. And on a subjective note, I hate surrealism and excessive symbolism for symbolism's sake.

Evangelion is easily my most despised anime. About 5-6 episodes in I was ready to quit, but figured I'd stick it out, because hey, something so popular must have done something right, yeah?

I still regret that decision.

Watch Cross Ange. It's basically a better Valvrave with an actually decent ending. The abuse the MC goes through in the first 5 or so episodes was annoying, though.
