Ah yes, my favorite. Articles about bitter old men being bitter about things. |

Nah, we discussed this back when it came out. Miyazaki definitely is suffering from "bitter old man" syndrome. <_< As if his style was the only valid style, and anyone who didn't meet his standards of "realism" is somehow inferior. There's definitely a lot of crap anime, but that goes for anything. I've only seen two of Miyazaki's films, but fundamentally he's a children's story writer akin to Disney, albeit backed with some pretty animation. Writing is definitely not his strong suit, though, and his stories aren't always narratively cohesive (Spirited Away) was particularly bad for cohesiveness). |

I'm not going to pretend that he doesn't have points, but he's not 100% right. He's also incredibly old and bitter. |

I read someone's thoughts on that article and they compared it to how American animation would be if bronies were calling all the animation shots. Which puts it a bit more in a reasonable perspective.

Miyazaki is right though, his films are the absolute pinnacle of animation and definitely don't just rely on being pretty. Any anime series or films to come out in the past 15 years doesn't even come close to his genuine works of art. also this season has Fafner s2, so it's pretty good |

rofl silvy Yeah, I saw Mononoke. Not sure which is better between it and Spirited Away, but I found Mononoke more underwhelming. That might just because I had higher expectations for my first Miyazaki film, and it ended up being basically Disney (with prettier animation). Western animation is such a travesty that having more My Little Pony-like shows would probably be a good thing. In my experience, barring exceptions like Avatar (of which I haven't seen more than six episodes or so, but it's often compared to the Japanese anime tradition), most of western animation is either for children or for comedy purposes. We don't really have serious narratives for a YA or adult audience. I sympathize with resisting the more overt otaku elements in the medium, but in painting the entire modern medium with the same brush instead of pointing to positive examples as an alternative, Miyazaki kind of discredits his own argument through hyperbole. He's basically shitposting. |

You're right, though, Unlimited Blade Works is the pinnacle of animation. Nothing can top it in quality of any description besides sex content since it doesn't have any directly. It's objectively the best show of all time unless someone makes it and changes the less awesome scenes to lesbian makeouts. |

It being a travesty and being mostly for children isn't the same thing. You can have good kids' shows, especially kids' shows that have long-form narratives. Not to toot the ol' Canadian horn or anything, but stuff like Beast Wars and Reboot are good examples of mixing episodic while still having a long-form plot and good concepts. They're still for children, but they don't talk down to them. And yeah, tons of anime is for children. But not all of it. |

If it makes you feel any better, I stopped watching UBW too. Yeah Satty, I remember you being fairly disappointed with Princess Mononoke, I still think it was a good movie but everyone has a thing for hyping up Miyazaki as a god so I can imagine it being underwhelming to some. Then again, I'm kinda biased in that I can't dislike anything with a green Aesop to it, I've only read 2 volumes of Nausicaa but it seems to have similar themes, albeit with a more interesting setting and premise. I'm curious as to what modern anime Miyazaki has actually watched, did he just turn on the TV late at night one day to see some ecchi harem show, drop his cigarette from his mouth, saying "my god, what the [radio edit] is this shit?" |

What recent western animation have you seen, Aaron, out of curiosity? Like, within the past five years stuff?
