It's pretty damn great so far, but that's just after one episode. The metafictional and mythic elements are really interesting. Base Shaft once again. The pls is real but not too too bad so far, I can overlook it because the rest is great. Monogatari is a fairly interesting series. There's nothing else quite like it in terms of uniqueness.

Oh god, I bet a lot of people are probably happy that she's the one with the role of the Major. Personally, I feel like it's something that can definitely be pulled off live action, but it really doesn't need a live action adaptation since the anime film already looks so damn good anyways. On Death Note, although I find the general idea interesting and it was a fun watch, I found the series dragged on too much(ep 24 and onwards roughly). The clever game of cat and mouse it had going on turns into scenarios that are mostly just plain old luck and I had a hard time sympathizing with Light as a character since he doesn't have much backstory or motives to justify his actions. It doesn't seem like a lot of people here talk about the more well known anime series, despite the popularity of anime on this forum. I really liked some of the more "mainstream" anime such as FMA and Code Geass, but others, particularly Evangelion, is not my cup of tea, definitely goes in the overrated bin for me.

What do you mean by well-known? It's tough to clearly define what's "well-known" since someone's perspective on the popularity of a series can vary quite a bit but generally stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Death Note, Attack on Titan, FMA and such are popular enough that if someone watches even a bit of anime here and there, there's a good chance they know about those series. Yeah, I found the original FMA anime really took its time building things up and didn't really impress me until around halfway through, some of the changes they made to the story in the original FMA anime were pretty interesting though, made me appreciate the slow start to the series a lot more.

She's just...there, for me. And I don't think anyone sympathizes with Light unless you think death is a reasonable punishment for even the most harmless crimes. He's a mass murdering manipulative psychopath, and a genius. You want to see how he falls. Because they all do. It's like Walter White from Breaking Bad. Sure compared to Light you can start off by sympathizing with him but Walter forgets his own goal and becomes a murdering power crazy drug lord. And you want to see how he falls from his throne.

Words-as-power, particularly the images of kanji as the god, and on Senjoughara's (did I spell that right?) body were fantastic. I also love Shaft's use of mixed media, as always, and some of the way they convey meaning through image or symbol (the girl with the hole in her head = used first when Senjoughara smashed her would-be rapist in the head, but symbolizing also the way her memories and dignity were taken, leaving a hole in her "self"). tl;dr despite immense amounts of pls, Shaft still manages to be amazing

Yeah, I'm indifferent to her as well, but I know a lot of people that are practically obsessed with her. I agree that Light is a psychopath, but I still think you can sympathize with a character like that. If the show gave more reason for "why" he decided to start killing "criminals" for justice, I'd be able to understand his motivations for going down that path once he found the Death Note. Even if I definitely think he takes things to the extreme, especially later on in the series. It's like how you can put yourself in the shoes of a good antagonist, then say "yeah, I can see why he/she is doing this" or agree with their intentions, even if you don't necessarily think that what they're doing is the best course of action. Spoilers for Death Note Although, I did find the moments where Light and L become friends really did build both of them as characters, it gave you some insight into what could have been if they weren't trying to kill each other. They're both incredibly intelligent people with a strong sense of justice, divided solely by having different ideas of what "justice" should entail. There's definitely some actual friendship felt by L, with Light, it's tough to say since he could actually like L as a person, or it could just as easily be a fake friendship in order to kill L once and for all. It's probably the latter with Light, but I really would've liked to see more of an emotional side to him like, say Guts in Berserk, who comes across as a near-emotionless, killing machine made of muscle at first, but you see a more emotional, vulnerable side of him as the story goes on. The final scene before Light kills L is probably the highlight of the series for me. I still wished they just wrapped things up after that because it was tough to look at the other antagonists as being of the same caliber as L(and it was tough for Light to do the same, since his underestimation was part of what led to his downfall).
