It's probably worse No, trust me, it really isn't. At the end of the day, you can just pretend the anime doesn't exist and go back to the VN. Psycho Pass on the other hand, doesn't conclude everything in season 1, so this season is stepping all over the things that could have been. Plus UBW has cool fight scenes and the servants, PP2 either butchers or doesn't have the characters from the first season and regurgitates details from said first season all over your face. Then introduces a bunch of characters only to kill them off in the next episode to show how hardcore and brutal it is.

It was great to see Shirou get the smack-talking on his ideals we knew was coming, as well as SOMEONE finally snap and give him what he had coming to him. Caster is definitely my favourite character so far. She's so wonderfully OP, and it's great to see a mage of actual complexity. With her thought towards what comes after the Holy Grail and her strategic planning, Archer's claim that the outcome of her winning would be disasterous coupled with his observation that she's soft-hearted, she's definitely one of the more interesting characters in her complexity. And she's a massive show-boater and arrogant as [radio edit] (not bothering to block anything because of her regeneration, playing at so-and-so's mercy when Archer knows full well she can just escape). We haven't seen much of her ideas yet, but she has a temperamentality and whimsicality that makes me like her, for completely subjective reasons. I like how Assassin let Archer through to give Caster a scare. It's a cute little glimpse into the kind of scale that Servants operate on, as well as a glimpse into Assassin's character ("oh, I'll let this super dangerous foe in to give my Master a scare"/is she too complacent?). Far more disgusting than Saberfanning is Saber's fanning of Shirou. God damn it Saber. The fight scenes are absolutely stunning, though. I really liked all three fights here (Archer vs. Caster, Assassin vs. Saber, and even that fragment of Assassin vs. Archer, I actually went "holy shit" at that). Ufotable's cinematography is great as usual, and I didn't notice an lapses in directiorial decision-making this time. I do like how Archer has resurrected the ghost of Kiritsugu's philosophy, and more emphatically so. It really makes this feel a bit continuous with Fate/Zero, and we have a bit more context for what Shirou is struggling against. Shirou's complete naivete and stupidity is still on full display, but at least he shows some signs of developing. And it was immensely satisfying to see Shirou slashed and crawling bleeding along the ground while Archer stalks him. Still annoying to see Shirou walking again not long after. Can we just have Shirou like, bedridden for maybe five episodes while the multi-dimensional characters do things?

I don't agree that it's garbage, but I do agree there are some flaws in the source material that are hard to get around. There's long stretches of the visual novel where only talking is happening, not fighting, and for some reason that reads better in a visual novel than in an anime. Possibly because I expect that out of novels, and I can speedread if the ideas aren't particularly deep or complicated (not skip or skim, they just take less time to comprehend). But in anime, you're mandated to go at the set speed. Solbowz and I were talking about how Shirou and Saber are basically ported straight from the VN as-is, and how much of a shame that was. Saber was so much more interesting in Fate/Zero because she actually had internal conflicts, and ideological/philosophical discussions with Rider, Archer, and Kiritsugu. Fate/Zero tables multiple ways of living or things to live for, and some are quite well-rounded. Others obviously aren't, and people would disagree about whether these ideas are compelling or not (Kyle and Draco would for sure, and a lot of people don't like Kiritsugu it seems). With Fate/Stay Night, Shirou and Saber's bland ideals so far stand in sharp contrast. Shirou's prologue hints at how Shirou's pacifistic idealism is wrapped up in a martyr-complex, survivor's guilt, and a genuine lack of concern for his well-being. But Shirou's quick recovery from all his injuries and general lack of consequences for his actions make it seem as if the narrative/writing favours his particular viewpoint* (much as F/Z appears to favour Kiritsugu's). Not only that, but Shirou's "shounen protag resistance" to injury/plot armour really saps a lot of tension out of it, doubly so now that we don't get a moment-by-moment interior monologue of his suffering. And now that Rin's no longer a viewpoint character, we don't get into her head as well, either -- we only see her in relation to and when dealing with Shirou, which generally is dumb (though I always enjoy Rin laying the smackdown, whether verbally or literally). If Rin and Shirou's roles were reversed and Shirou was the side-character to Rin's arc, it would be a much better story. Shirou just isn't interesting enough to be a focal character (at this point, he probably is in Heaven's Feel). At least Assassin, Archer, and Caster are great. And Lancer will be. Spoilers for Fate/Zero Favoured until the end, anyway. * Spoilers for all Unlimited Blade Works You could argue that Archer's existence is the subversion or challenge to Shirou's ideals, but the fact that Shirou ultimately wins over Archer and that Archer at some level still believes in those ideas just further reinforces that Shirou is Right. And yes, I know Shirou's super-healing is the result of Avalon. That doesn't make it more interesting.
