Couple of instances of characters repeating dialogue that didn't need to be (Archer more or less rephrasing something Rin just said, etc), but the animation is pretty great, and the fight scenes are fantastic. Ufotable also has a brilliant amount of subtlety with conveying characterization via small gestures and not overplaying it. A little "tch" of regret on Saber's part when she confronts Ilyasviel, Archer tightening his grip on his bow as he watches the battle play out, etc. Shirou's still a [radio edit]ing dumbass, but at least everyone tells him. Speaking of that, Rin kung fu'ing Shirou against a tree while telling him he's deadweight was fantastic, and I'm really glad they added the Rin vs. Ilyasviel fight (or at least, I don't remember that from the VN >_>). I do remember Ilyasviel being monstrous as a mage, but I forget if that was actually demonstrated or not. Either way, that mage battle answered my question of "Ilyasviel's right there, why don't they try targeting her instead?" Spoilers for Unlimited Blade Works route I love the triumphant smirk on Archer's face after firing Caldablarg, because he knows he might've been toasting Shirou as well. But yeah, Ilyasviel best girl

Was pretty fantastic, it sets its atmosphere very well and the animation is pretty evocative. It's definitely relatively slow-paced and reflective. It also reminds me a lot of Touhou, probably since it's working in the same realm of folklore. Not the Touhou games, but some of the side material, esp. the manga. Touhou Suzunaan - Forbidden Scrollery in particular, some of the others. Similar episodic (from what I hear) approach of "daily life in a world inhabited by fantastic things," and a similar premise of an investigator who seeks them out. I'm amused that the kouki seems to be basically the Lifestream. Where does that idea come from, I wonder? An underground river that's the source of life for all that lives? Apart from literalist interpretations like the "water table." That might be a factor, but are there any specific folktales for it?

The reason why they don't attack her is pretty self explanatory though, and was even in this episode. Shirou would never do it, Berserker is usually nearby to stop it, Rin was always too busy dealing with Shirou, and UBW spoilers not in the anime yet Archer still cares about Ilya, so he won't hurt her. Notice that he gripped his bow in frustration after he lied to Rin about not being able to see Ilya. Ilya and Rin moments are pretty much the only moments we see that despite everything he says, Archer can't quite stop being Shirou. Anyway what the flying [radio edit] that episode was [radio edit]ing awful God Hand does not [radio edit]ing work like that Invisible Air is only Rank C Saber's Strength is only Rank B Do either of those letters look like A I DON'T [radio edit]ING THINK SO jfc [radio edit]ing DEEN did this part better

I did kind of raise an eyebrow on that, but I understand they had to establish the regeneration abilities somehow. Using Cadalblarg would probably have been better, since it IS A-rank, but I guess this suited how they wanted to match the dramatic tension. And since this is a standalone without the Fate-route, they had to establish that Berserker has regeneration early for the audience. Buuuut I think they did do that particular adaptation rather poorly. For UBW as a whole, not the anime Yeah, I noticed that thing with Archer's regret/tightening the grip on the bow, but didn't mention it because of spoilers. Likewise, I think Saber didn't go after Ilyasviel because she still has lingering regrets about how that whole travesty played out before.

In the VN, Berserker was an unstoppable force of destruction that Saber could only manage to keep up with once they got to the graveyard and she got a terrain advantage. None of her strikes could harm him, and this was explicitly spelled out in the VN. Furthermore, in the VN, Berserker didn't just stand there and take Caladbolg without any damage, he DEFENDED against it because it COULD actually hurt him. If they wanted to show off his regeneration (which they don't really have to, since spoilers), they could've just upped that into a kill. And then there's Ilya's lines. "I underestimated you, Rin. Saber doesn't interest me, but your Archer does." or whatever they were. That happens because Saber couldn't scratch him, but Archer could. Here, Saber KILLED him, and Archer didn't even scratch him, yet she still has that line? Uuuuuuuuuuuuuh no, that's dumb Also Saber is VERY secretive about her Noble Phantasm, but here she goes exposing it this early. Yes, in the VN she was going to use Excalibur here, but in that case she'd have no reason to believe it wouldn't be a sure kill since she doesn't know how God Hand works, just like Ufotable. Also if Saber's normal strikes and Invisible Air can hurt Berserker, then so can Lancer's normal strikes and Gae Bolg. Lancer isn't as strong as Saber, but without God Hand, there's no reason he shouldn't be able to keep up with or even kill Berserker a few times either. Oh, and recall that Saber got one scratch in this fight. ONE. "He could probably take the other six Servants himself" my [radio edit]ing ass Also there was no "hue hue hue my Servant is Hercules get rekt scrubs" but that's a minor complaint compared to the rest of this bullshit. Except wait UBW spoilers not in the anime yet The entire reason why Rin and Shirou go to ask Ilya for help against Caster is because they know Hercules knew Medea in his life, and thus he might be able to figure out her tricks. That can still be saved if Ilya tells them later but otherwise even that jfc So in case you thought I was joking before no, I'm not DEEN's version of this fight was 100% more faithful to the VN @your other spoiler Except Saber doesn't know Ilya is Iri's daughter. She doesn't know that Ilya doesn't age, and so she thinks Iri's daughter would be 18 right now.

I'd suggest anyone that likes it to also check out Natsume Yuujinchou. A lot is different, but it's the same concept of one guy solving supernatural problems in an episodic format with a good art style. 7 episodes into Symphogear G. I don't know why this has such a negative reception on MAL, it's a really fun watch. Hibikki has grown on me as a character, probably best girl.

I don't know why this has such a negative reception on MAL, it's a really fun watch. Hibikki has grown on me as a character, probably best girl. Yeah, I liked Hibiki a lot in the first season but G really pounded in my appreciation of her as a character, especially the last several episodes.

"Oh wait nvm yes he can." This is also why I'm skeptical of excessive special effects, which so far, seem to be used more to distract from what's actually happening instead of enhancing it. Rin vs Ilya was good, though. Shirou is back to being annoying, but not as annoying as F/SN Shirou yet.
