Episode 0 is mostly there to introduce you to the tone of the series. The pacing slows down considerably afterwards.

But visuals are still only an individual component among several other components. What if a show has a bad art style but does everything else spectacularly? Hell, art style is in itself just a component of visual aesthetic since there's also animation quality and other things that contribute to it.

Don't feel bad, I didn't watch Accel World cause the main character looked ugly. Visuals can be pretty important though, I started watching some series just because the artstyle looked nice but good characters and story can still save bad art and animation obviously.
