Manga's always a good place to start, and if you don't mind 80's anime style I would suggest looking into that too. |

I grew up watching Voltron, so outdated style ain't a thing to me. I don't think I have the time or dedication to do the manga though. |

I've always found, personally, that reading the manga of a series tends to take less time than watching the anime. But YMMV. |

That's cause an episode can often be several chapters, you can read chapters really quickly, and anime has filler.

You get to watch people's heads explode. If you don't mind watching 80's shows then I don't understand why you're not watching it right now. Also, you get to hear this in every fight scene. How awesome is that? |

![]() This is Akagi. This is a fairly good explanation of what you will get when you watch Akagi. Seriously. It somehow makes mahjong into the most badass thing since... badassery. |

Some eldritch abomination got me to watch Ore no Imouto and Soredemo. Ore no Imouto is eh so far. Main character is basically an otaku's wet dream: Good grades, fashion model, socialite, but plays incest eroge in secret. Takes a nice stab at how popular culture views Otakus, but It's being muddled in moe exploitation. Shame too, since the animation is pretty decent. Soredemo's lead character reminds me of one of my friends who acts just like her, which is partly why I keep watching. Humor ranges from fairly funny to "eh", though. Directed by same person who did Arakawa. |

So I've begun watching 3 new series. The first is The World God Only Knows, which is about a guy who is the undisputed Girl Game Master. He's known as the Capturing God, and he can win any game (and has won all the games. ALL OF THEM.) One day he gets an e-mail with a contract to track down lost souls. Thinking it to be a challenge to beat a new game, he accepts... at which point a demon (who, of course, is a cute girl) becomes bound to him until they capture all the Lost Souls in the city. Lost Souls live in girls' hearts, so he has to get the girl to replace the Lost Soul with him so that the young demon can capture them. You can guess where it goes from here. Interestingly, it's a harem series that involves amnesia as a plot point to explain why there aren't seven hundred girls going after both him and each other — after he's gotten a girl, everyone forgets his influencing of events. Currently on episode 5, which ends with a cruel cliffhanger. The second is Bakuman. Our hero is middle school student Moritaka Mashiro, a young artist who doesn't really have any dreams or desires and wants to (a) confess to the girl he loves, Azuki Miho and (b) enter society and do what's expected of him because, honestly, he has no reason not to. Enter top-in-the-class sits-in-the-back penner of essays that have made it into national contests, Akito Takagi, who notices that Moritaka left behind a notebook in which he'd been sketching Azuki. Akito gives Moritaka the notebook, and asks him to join in Akito's dream of becoming a mangaka. It gives a look at what the manga industry can be like from the point of two upstarts. Also on episode 5 right now. Despite its very different tone, it's by the people who made Death Note. Finally, there's Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls. This show... is fanservice at its most egregious. It also has a plot, and the plot is pretty good, but god damn there is a lot of fanservice. I mean seriously. It takes place in an alternate universe where Japan is still ruled by the shogun and for some reason the Feudal Japanese Lords exist in modern times and are cute girls. But a shadow is coming, and will our heroes be able to figure out what this threat is? Also on ep 5. The fanservice... is enormous. |
