I've also seen streaming sites list the first as having 14 episodes and the 2009 28, even though MAL says they both only have 14.

So in chronological order, some of the S2 episodes happen inbetween S1 episodes.

Independence is a thing. EDIT: Broadcast order -was- done for a reason, buuuut it's a very bad reason. KyoAni trolling, essentially. But yeah, really only spacing out the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya arc be spread out through the whole season. Buuuuuut.

But it's hecka confusing, and the anime-only rain episode also makes a good final episode, so...
